The practice of a child Psychologist is at times both rewarding and challenging.
Sometimes, Bailey Axton really does feel like she's made a difference in some child's life, other times she wonders why she even bothers at all. Perhaps it was her nativity, her kindness that doomed her. Nothing killed her like the thought of being unable to help a child.
Case in point; him.
Lanky, underfed, bruises and scars down his arms, dark crow's feet under his eyes, and a slight quiver anytime she made an abrupt movement. She had worked with him for years; since he was six-years-old. His guardian brought him in, explained far too briefly of an abusive family and a lack of exposure to society before she never saw him again.
She did what she could, but at times he was so broken that she feared he would never be whole again. She was getting seemingly nowhere, when — he vanished.
He stopped coming to his sessions. No longer was he waiting in her lobby at 9'oclock sharp every Tuesday and Thursday morning. No longer was he sitting across from her, twiddling the hem of his bleach stained, oversized sweatshirt. No longer was he even living in that practically barren orphanage she knew he hated so much.
She was shocked, understandably so, and a little disappointed. He was arguably her favourite patient yet, in some ways, her least. She wondered if she should file a police report, or at least contact the authorities, but people told her not to worry about it.
Why shouldn't she?
Maybe because, when July rolled around - he was there.
Sitting in her lobby, legs kicking under the chair. He was there but he was different. Cheeks fuller, green eyes brighter, and all around looked healthy. Happier.
But there was one problem; he's delusional.
"Mouldyvort?"
"No, Voldemort."
It seemed they were back to square one again.
