CHAPTER 36.4: Dinner with family

I cleared my throat and get their attention. Mom and Dad looked at me and I can’t read them both. I just looked at them directly and never show any emotions.

 

 

“Welcome home.” I said. Is it really home now? It feels like this isn’t home yet…

Mom smiled and rushed at me and hugged me tightly. Nanatili lang ako sa pwesto ko. I never hugged her back, never been surprised and never smiled. Why should I? I felt my shoulders wet.

Napahinto ako at napatingin kay Mommy. Is she crying? Bakit… bakit ganito ang nararamdaman ko? Gusto kong umiyak pero parang ayoko.

Kumalas si Mommy sa yakap and I saw her face. Tears run through her cheeks and she smiled at me. I can see her eyes full of sorrow but still, I gave her a blank face.

 

“I miss you Venee… Namiss ka ni Mommy.” She said not so loud but enough for me to hear. What should I say? Kahit ganito, nakaramdam parin naman ako ng pangungulila sa mga magulang. But I can’t show them my weak side.

 

 

“Uh… me too?” I said… well, more asking. The truth is, I really missed her. I really do. But I can’t tell her. Parang umurong ang dila ko. Her smile fade away but still looked at me as if she’s examining every detail of my face. She touched my cheeks, my eyebrows, my eyes, my nose, my lips, my ears, my hair.

I secretly bit my lower lip. I remember Mom doing this thing when I was a kid. When I can still feel that I’ve been loved by them. She’s always doing this… Gusto ko na talagang maiyak. Pinigilan ko ang sarili ko. I turn my head away at iniwasan ang mga haplos niya.

 

“You’ve had a long trip. Kumain na po ba kayo? Nakahanda na po ang dinner.” I said and walk towards living her there but before I pass them, I pass Dad. I look at him but he just looked at me coldly.

I want to say something to him but I chose to ignore him as well. Nilagpasan ko lang silang lahat at naunang tinungo ang dining room.

“Ya, ano pong dinner?” Tanong ko sa kanya sabay upo sa upuan ko.

“Yung paborito mo hija.” She said kaya kahit papaano ay napangiti ako niyakap siya.

“Waha, namiss kong iluto mo yon Ya. Akala ko hindi mo na ako lulutuan ng ganon eh.” Natawa naman si Yaya at napakalas ako sa yakap ng makita silang pumasok. Napawi ang ngiti ko at sa halip ay umupo nalang.
