The perks of Depression

Depression
A shallow hole
That crumbles in on you as you dig yourself out.
You struggle and by the end of the day you give up,
Completely and fully exhausted.
After the days of standing at the bottom of your hole,
dark and getting darker by the second.
You think of the end.
You think of who you could have been.
Who you should have been.
And why you aren't who you want to be.
You wonder why you don't like yourself,
Why others seem not to like you ethier.
After what seems like months of thinking of when the pain will end you see a small glimmer.
A glimmer of hope as an unexpected friend shows her face.
She reaches out her hand offering it to you,
You think it could be a trick to throw you in further.
You hesitantly grab her hand and she pulls you from the darkness and into a blinding light.
You shield your face.
As you wait for the over shoe to drop, she smiles and tells you stories of others.
Shows you how to love yourself and how to look at others in a new light.
She shows you the perks of Depression.
The perks of depression?
What an odd idea.
You think of what these perks could be and then you see her wrist.
She knows your pain.
The perks of Depression, understanding is the key.

Writter's note: A close friend told me he had been having a hard time with pre-depression and that I help him get back on track. He inspired this poem.
