cold as ice~

millie's eyes popped open.

it was bright and white clouds of snow surrounded her. she was standing in the middle of a road covered in ice. she didn't remember anything before that. just standing on the ice, hoping she wouldn't slip.

she glanced around at the snowy forest that surrounded her, watching snowflakes fall. she smiled at the peaceful scenery.

suddenly, there was a car racing towards her. it was bright and red, and she could hear the engine roaring. it was going maybe forty miles per hour, and on this snow, it would surely hit millie if it didn't move out of the way.

millie's heart started to pound. she was panicking. she didn't want to die; not this young. being only seventeen, she knew so much lied ahead of her. she knew if she ran too fast, she'd slip and fall. but if she didn't move, the car would hit her.

so she started to run.

then she slipped.

millie could feel her heart pounding in her chest and her ears and her feet. she felt like her heart was drumming on her chest, begging to get out. millie grabbed onto to the slippery ice, trying to escape.

but she couldn't.

the car was too close.

so she braced herself and-

the car went through her.

what?

millie's eyes popped open as the car sped through her. it was like it was a movie; in slow motion. she saw her limbs waiver as the wheels seemed to make her arm disintegrate into the air; like particles of her arm were floating.

then they came intact after the car was gone.

millie looked at the car that should've killed but passed through her as if she were a ghost. she felt pale and her heart wouldn't stop beating. a million different questions bombarded her brain and she tried to get up from the ice.

then millie saw a plowed path of snow that led to some random part of the forest. she carefully and slowly exited the ice, her mind still filled with questions, following the path.

but all her questions were answered when she saw it.

her own car was slammed against a tree face first, the front of the car squished like a compressed soda can. millie didn't want to look inside because she felt like she already knew.

but she did anyway.

millie saw her own body crushed against the wheel and the shattered window. her head was bleeding and her face was whiter than the snow. her body was crushed between the steering wheel and the seat. the airbag provided almost no cushion.

millie didn't remember dying.

she didn't remember becoming a ghost.

~

after an hour of staring at her own dead body, mille was not sure whether or not to scream or cry. she tried to remember what caused the accident, but she couldn't. she just remembered driving.

a car pulled up later and reported the accident. she watched as the paramedics came and tried to carefully remove her body from the car, but it was too late. they all know it. her organs were crushed by the car and there was no saving her.

she was gone.

she saw a few cars pull up in the distance. a few minutes later, people came down to investigate the scene.

"the breaks malfunctioned,"

"how could the breaks malfunction? this car is new."

"someone cut the wiring. somebody wanted this,"

~~~~~~~~~~~
she saw the faces of people she knew about an hour later.
her mom and dad and older brother.
millie remembered having a younger sister, too. but she wasn't there.
they went up to the officers and started talking, then crying. they were sobbing and tears flowed from their eyes like waterfalls. millie saw them from a distance. she couldn't bear look at them from up close. it would hurt too much.
she was already crying from her little patch of snow.
then a boy came down, looking confused. he had curly black hair and his face was sprinkled with freckles. his face was pale and he was tall. well, taller than millie.
and millie knew who he was.
she stood up and raced towards him. she stood in front of him, begging him to turn around. she didn't want him to know. she didn't want him to cry. she didn't want him to hurt.
she wanted him to be safe.
but he passed right through her as if she were nothing.
well, she was nothing. she was practically air.
finn wolfhard. he was her boyfriend of three years. they started dating freshman year. it wasn't anything serious. they just hung out and kissed every now and then. but sophomore year, they felt like they couldn't live without one another.
and now junior year.
she didn't want to see the look on his face, but still, she turned around and saw him walk towards her family. she followed him and stood beside him, tilting her head up to look at his face.
"what happened?" finn asked, "where's millie?"
millie looked to her mom, as she said through sobs, "millie.....got into a car accident....i....the.....the breaks, something about the breaks and......she's gone finn,"
finn took a step back.
millie placed a hand on his shoulder. he didn't look over.
"no," finn said, his voice small and weak.
millie's mom pressed a hand to her forehead and nodded, her face red and blotchy, "i'm so sorry, finn,"
finn looked past millie's mom and saw her face. he saw millie's body lying in a dark blue bag, almost zipped up, but not quite. he saw her face blue, green, and white all at once. her hair was a mess and blood leaked from her nose and ears. her eyes were closed.
finn stared at the corpse and tears leaked out of his eyes as he started to breathe heavily. he clutched his stomach, saying, "oh god,"
millie cried as she saw his chest rise and fall rapidly as he tried to calm himself with a hand to his chest.
then finn turned around and ran. he ran towards his car. millie followed him, as he got in the driver's seat of his car, crying with his hands folded over the steering wheel. he was sniffling and sobbing uncontrollably.
and as millie sat next to him in the passenger's seat, she cried with him.
