Hi, I'm Maddie. I'm 14 and I'm a typical teenager. Well, I have some anger issues and I'm labelled as the 'Bad Girl' for breaking most of the rules at school. There is nothing interesting about me, and I live in a small town called Pottersville. You might of not heard of it, it only contains 50 people. I live with my dad,mom and younger brother, Joe. He irritates me all the time, but I still love him. Nothing interesting happens here, well not that I know of. Pottersville is my childhood home and I love it so much. Over the years, I have met many people like my best friends, Emily and Lily. Never had the thought of leaving crossed my mind: I would miss this place too much. Now, I just want to get out of here and away from everyone.
It all started last week. My parents haven't been acting the same. Unlike their usual selves, they weren't joking around and we stopped going out as a family. It was like they shut us out from themselves. Their working hours were extended so Joe and I spent most of the time together, alone. They have been..quite strange and very distant from my brother and I. At first I thought someone had died or something like that, though I later realised that it wasn't that case.Once my brother and I found out what it was, it changed forever.
Monday 12th 5:23pm
We were all sitting on our long, cozy couch, with blankets covering us. I had a bowl of popcorn on my lap, and I was munching away on it. We were watching out favourite movie 'Rush Hour 3' it never failed to make us smile. I started giggling as they were singing. We were in the middle of the movie, when the news came on.
"Ugh, dad change the channel or something," I groaned, I hated the news, nothing interesting ever came on. "It's just boring."
"Breaking news! This just came out. A 38 year old man has escaped the mental asylum, and is on the loose. He was sent for murdering people, and is now believed to be more dangerous than ever. He is dressed as a vampire, and goes around house murdering people in their sleep. If you catch him, the reward is £2 million. Jenny will give you some more..." the news man reported on TV.
I sat still, as I looked at the image of the man. He was murdering people in their sleep, dressed as a vampire?! No wonder he ended up in the mental asylum, he's absolutely crazy. What scared me the most was the fact that the asylum was only half a mile away from Pottersville. Thought we were probably his next victims as we are the closest. I heard some of the stories about him, and how he murdered people. Slit their throats, took out their intestines, tortured them endlessly. While being scared, I also was kind of happy. Nothing interesting ever happened here, it was like an adventure.
I look over to see my parents' faces, as white as a cloud, as they look at each other. Maybe they were thinking the same thing as me. Actually they might of been thinking about something worse.
"Kids go to your rooms. Now." my dad said, in his 'Don't question me about this, just do as you're told' tone.
Immediately, Joe and I scrambled out of living room, and headed for the stairs. Well Joe did, obviously I didn't. I wasn't stupid, something bad was going on right now, and it had something to do with what that news reporter said. Their expressions changed faster than I could say 'Murder'. I sat at the bottom of the stairs, and listened carefully.
"...Daniel I told you that we should've moved straight away. He's definitely going to target us, and it wasn't like before. We have children and responsibilities! Plus, they don't know anything! We should of told them ages ago." my mum whisper-shouted. Her face was now flooded with anger and worry.
"We can't! Mary think about it, it would make it too obvious that it's us! He has other people to target too. It wasn't only us who was involved in it. Stop worrying it will be fine. Also, he would just come..." my dad started answering, but my mum cut him off.
"Are you crazy?!" she wasn't trying to keep quiet now, "We have children who need to go to safety! If they get hurt, you are for blame! Stop acting stupid and think about our family, not just yourself!" my mum growled.
Deciding this was way too complicated, I stepped into the living room. I felt confused. Joe had followed me and stood right next to me. Either they explained or I was getting the hell out of here. My parents arguing was too much for me. I had never witnessed this before. And what were they talking about, what did they get involved in?
"What? What's happening? Where are we moving? Who's targeting us? We have a right to know, we are your kids,' I asked as kindly as I could, but my stony face gave it all away. I was livid at this point. Someone was targeting us and my brother and I didn't know? What kind of parents are they? Well my mum said she was going to tell us, but she didn't, so that made her as bad as dad.
My mum gulped. She took a deep breath and started explaining. "The guy on TV, the one who escaped, is out for us. Around 20 years ago, he had blamed us for his father's death. There was a robbery and several people were told to kill him and then they would get paid. Somehow, your father got involved but knew nothing about that. He didn't kill him, but it looked like he and some others did. Now, its got into his head that they all killed his father for money. We earned this, your father and I." my mum sighed, "He is the one who killed your uncle."
I gasped. Tears started pouring down my cheeks. I loved my uncle, he was like my mini dad. He looked after us everyday, and always bought us sweets. He had been killed 2 years ago, but I never knew why. All we knew was that his body had been chopped up into tiny pieces and thrown into a garbage bag.
All I knew was that there is a murderer running around, killing innocent people. I'm only 14, what can I do?
