Missing String

The tangled mess of red. Strings laced across the lands, across oceans, and across continents. A world covered in red every person having a string connected to another. Then... What about the people without strings? Where their lover died, where they gave up... Those few people fear being found out... In a world of love and lovers if you don't have one... You live in a world where you have to hide and avoid connections if they found out you'd lose your job, house, life... It's been decided that if you don't have a lover then you'd most defiantly fall into a never-ending depression. That's not true though... How am I so sure? Because I don't have a string either... I don't remember having a time that I did... A crisp snowflake lands on my nose breaking my thoughts. I look up and watch as the snowflakes slither across the sky with a soft smile. Unaware of where I was walking and end up toppling into someone. We both let out a yelp of surprise as I look down at this beautiful lady in front of me. I can feel my cheeks flush bright red. My eyes fall on her hand seeing that she had her own string. I quickly pull back embarrassed and ashamed "I'm so sorry..." I manage to choke out in my shame. I offer my hand and she takes it with a kind smile "it's no worry, miss...?" I clear my throat trying to muster any confidence I had left "Sabrina... My name's Sabrina." Her eyes looked so soft and kind and her lips looked as soft as marshmallows. She was pretty much radiating a kind, warm aura. It was beyond calming. "Amelia." She says and I blink in confusion making her giggle "My name, it's Amelia." I frown noticing her string was collecting snow, could it be that it was... I seem to become alert to everything as I take her hand and lead her to an alleyway. I listen to passing conversations and it didn't seem anyone noticed. I sigh in relief once we got to the far end until Amelia pulls her hand away from me. I look over rather shocked and she huffs softly "What was that for?" I sigh and gently take her string picking it up. There was no way it was real it would have gone through my hand "Yarn... It's clever but in snow it doesn't work." I turn and see her face pale. "H-Hey wait, don't worry I'm the same." Without thinking I pull off my gloves showing I had no string. I feel my cheeks flush red at an idea "How about this... I won't tell anyone if you go on a date with me?" I was greeted with silence and I swear I could hear my heart pounding in my ears. I tear up thinking of the worse outcomes before a soft pair of lips touches my cheek "Sure..." I laugh happily and hug her.
