{Chapter Two}

That night I sat outside the cave, watching the sky, the smell of blood from the earlier battle lingers in the air. My shoulder has been cleaned and dressed in a make-shift bandage which is basically torn cloth. Belle’s voice forces me to break my gaze at the night’s sky, “You saved my life today” she smiles at me and I smile back. Then she kisses me. At first I back away, in fear that this will cost me my life if Lucas ever found out. When I pull away, Belle looks up at me and frowns and it makes me feel bad for rejecting her, then she tries again, this time I don’t back away, my hands automatically find their way to her waist and pull her close. We kiss under the moonlight for what seems like forever, but then I feel a force pulling us apart. No prizes for guessing who, Lucas has me by the scruff of my shirt and is baring his teeth angrily, I decide I’m not going to put up with him any longer.  Belle tries to pull Lucas’ hands off of me but her attempts are useless, “I saved her life you know! And probably yours too!” I shout, his intruding had ruined a perfect moment for me and I wasn’t going to let him off, “In fact without me your whole pack would probably be dying from starvation”. Lucas’ eyes are fixated on mine, his pupils burning brightly, “We have plenty of trackers, we don’t need you” he snaps back, spitting in my face. I have to laugh because I can hear the frustration and hesitation in his voice, “I saved your ass, and you know it!” I practically scream at him, but now about half of the pack have gathered around us and are staring, eyes wide, and Belle- she’s gone – I look around and see her running off into the wood, I call after her, but she just keeps running, and then I’m running too.

It doesn’t take long to catch up with Belle, but by then she already has a mental image of where she is heading in her head and immediately starts darting into different directions, weaving in and out of trees and shrubs, once or twice I almost lose her, but even then it doesn’t take long to find her familiar scent.

Once I find her, I stay hidden in the brush for a bit, watching her. She’s sat by the river back, close-by to where we first met. I stay low and watch her for a while, but then she speaks. “Come out, I know you’re there” and so, after a moment of hesitation, I stand and make my way over to the river bank and sit by her side.

We sit in dead silence for a while; neither of us even tries to speak.  I think it’s about midnight before either one of us speaks, “I probably shouldn’t have done that...” Belle mumbles softly as if she didn’t want to admit it, but I nodded and sighed softly, “It probably wasn’t the best place or time…” I say after a short silence, and Belle gives a soft grunt of agreement.  What Belle says next surprises me, in fact what she DOES surprises me more than what she says. Just as I was about to give up and leave, Belle begins to start shifting on the spot, and changes back into her human form. I try to avoid looking at her, but it’s dark, and who could blame a man? For no more than a minute Belle sits beside me in her human form, completely naked and then she stands up, walks a little bit across until she’s in front of the deep lake that the river runs into, and then dives in. As I watch her I have to pick up my jaw because by now I feel like it’s dragging underneath me as I make my way over to the edge of the lake and kneel down. Belle swims over to the side and smiles up at me. “You coming in? The water is fine, trust me” but before I can answer Belle reaches up and grasps my wrist and swims back from the edge, pulling me into the lake with her. The cold sting of the water causes me to shift back into my human form, and I shiver, “Damn, I wish it didn’t do that...” Belle smirks and floats a couple of meters away from me, “Do what?” she calls to me, and even though it’s dark, the moon casts a reflection on the water, and with it, lights up Belles figure. I blush. In an attempt to distract myself I look away, “Oh, y’know... change when the temperature does” I try to find something in the water to focus on other than Belle. As I find a patch of moonlight reflected in the water to focus on, ripples in the reflection tell me that Belle is moving closer, so for a moment I let myself peek and I see that, now, she is less than a centimetre away from me. I quickly back away and she slowly follows, “Change when the temperature does? I don’t do that, no-one else in the pack does that.” The closer she gets, the harder I find it to advert my eyes. I gulp, “Oh well you know, maybe I’m just…” Belle finishes my sentence for me and by now, she’s so close, I can feel her warm breath against me, “Special?” by now she’s pressing her body against me, and my voice is reduced to a soft whimper, “Yeah.” Then at that moment Belle kisses me again and I don’t pull back, my hands slide underneath the water and wraps them-selves around her back, pulling her close to me as we kiss. This time I don’t try to rush anything, because I know Lucas wouldn’t have followed us. He’d just be back at the cave, brooding and probably plotting my demise.
