THE DEVIL: PART ONE

Middle school was when people started changing.

In elementary we were all best friends with one another. In middle school it felt like we were on separate planets altogether.

I remember clearly one girl from my middle school years. We don't speak of her name anymore, so I shall call her 'the Devil'.

Now this girl was as lonely as they get. She came to school hours before the gates opened, and rumors had it she had a strange habit scratching trees. If you visit our school, you can still see those scratch marks, along with terrifying traces of-

Was that blood?!

Anyways, the Devil had no fellow companions throughout her middle school years. Some pitied her, some made fun of her, and some pretended she didn't exist.

No one really dared to get close to her. Some people claimed they caught glimpses of her dark eyes flashing red for brief moments, then darkening to their normal murky brown color. They said she often mumbled incoherent words, or appeared to be closely observing her fellow classmates.

I, for one, took no part in the bullying, but never made a move to help her. Actually, no one dared to help her. Once a kind 8th grader-god bless her-attempted to help 'the Devil' gather up her books and pencils after some immature student knocked it out of her hands. Supposedly, in return, 'the Devil' hissed at her, and snatched her items back.

No one really understood her. No one really tried to either.

One fateful day, I remember these events freakishly well, 5 years ago, in the middle of our 7th grade year, my only close friend, Lily, was unfortunately paired up with 'the Devil' for a major science project. As Lily was close to failing science, she had no choice but to complete the project. 'The Devil' insisted they work on the project at her dark, sketchy house/shack, instead of somewhere sensible like perhaps the public library, and Lily, being the timid child she was, foolishly agreed.

Wednesday afternoon, instead of walking home per usual, Lily rode the school bus home with 'the Devil'. Ah, I still regret not going with her. How stupid of me to think she was safe to go home with 'the DEVIL', of all people. Maybe if I'd gone with her, maybe-

Never mind, it's no use dwelling on the past...

Anyways, 2 hours later, I received a call from the police, of all people.

And the next thing I knew, I was in the police station, as a prime suspect for murder.
