His Letter

SHORT STORY

"And they lived happily ever after", I said as I closed the book that I was reading. It was entitled sleeping beauty, my favorite book when I was a child that my father gave on my 8th birthday. Everything written on that book makes me believed that life is like a fairytale where a knight in shining armor, or a handsome prince will come into your life to save you from all the troubles you'll get into. A perfect prince whose gonna love you unconditionally and will treat you like a princess. I once dreamt of having one back then. A guy that will treat me like those princesses I read from my fairytale books. A guy whom I can spend my happily ever after.
If only life is like a fairytale...

I was awaken from my thoughts when I heard my phone rang. So I immediately stood up to reach for my phone on the side table when I forgot that my book was on my lap. It was too late when I realized it so the book fell. I chose to ignore it and answer my phone because it might be urgent. 'The book won't walk anyway', I silently chuckled from that silly thought of mine.

As I reached my phone I quickly answered it when I saw my sister's name on the screen.
Me: Yes hello?
Becca: Where are you?
Me: On the rest house, why?
Becca: Aren't you going to come to his burial? Today is his last day.
Me: I can't, I can't stand seeing him there. It breaks my heart.
Becca: Hush now ok? I understand so don't cry now. Take care of yourself while you were there. I'll take care of everything for now so try to relax and enjoy yourself. I gotta go mommy needs me. Love you

I have no strength to respond so I let her drop the phone when she noticed that I am not talking. I returned my phone on the side table and went back to the sofa where my favorite book fell. I am about to get it when I noticed a piece of paper near the book. "Maybe it fell from the book" I said as I get the book and the paper on the floor.

I was suddenly curious about the paper I was handling so I decided to open it. It came from my book so there is no wrong if opened it, it's my possession. The paper was quite old based on the texture and the color has already faded from white to brownish.

When I opened it I noticed that it was a handwritten letter my name is written there indicating that it was for me. So I started reading it.

Dear Faith,

                   Maybe by the time that you are reading this letter I am already gone in this world. I decided to put this letter on your favorite book because I want you to know that even if I'm already gone, I will always be your knight in shining armor. I still remember the days where I saw you reading this book and called you a hopeless romantic and a cheap princess. We were so young that time. It was your eight birthday yet you're alone reading the book given by your father on that yard not minding the people who came on your birthday. I was with my dad that time whose a great friend and a business partner of your dad. I asked my dad why we came there and he said that it was the birthday of his precious youngest daughter. I wasn't convinced that it was a birthday party because there are no children and the visitors are all wearing a suite and gowns. It's more like a business gathering.
I was getting bored so I looked for a place where I can play and I just found myself looking at you reading on the swing at the garden of your mansion. You're so beautiful wearing your princess outfit yet the smile on your face while reading the book was more beautiful and I can't stop looking at you.
I tried to approach you but I was too intimidated  and I'm afraid that you'll noticed that I was mesmerized by your beauty so I chose to insult you so you won't have any suspicions. You were so mad at me that time and you look even prettier when you're pissed off.
We grew together and I started courting you when we we're on our college days, I just can't believe that you've been falling for me and I was just too happy. I was the happiest man alive when you became my girlfriend at last. It was fantastic! I promised myself to be your knight in shining armor and will treat you like a princess.
But unexpected things really happens especially in our happiest days of our lives. We were already one year when I was diagnosed of having a leukemia and I am not getting healthier. I chose to leave you and break your heart so you can still mend your heart and find a better man, a better healthy prince whose gonna treat you like a princess and will serve you for the rest of his life. I tried to get many treatments and find a cure but fate won't allow me and my body was slowly giving up. I was too ashamed of myself. I'm such a bastard for making you cry and lonely. I'm sorry honey, I can't do anything about my health. I asked a favor to you sister, becca to put this letter to your favorite book so that you'll still remember me. I'm on my last days of my life now honey and the doctor said that I'll only have a month to live. I'm sorry honey for living you so early. I don't deserve such a precious princess like you. I only have one wish for you, please don't close your heart for other guy and let yourself be happy. I'll be so much happy if you found a new prince charming and will give you the best life. Just don't forget that I was once you knight in shining armor who fell crazily inlove with you. I love you so much honey. Please be happy.

My tears kept flowing on my face as I read the last love letter I received from my knight in shining armor. I simply can't understand why things like this has to happen where we are the most happiest living creature on earth. However, fate is really unpredictable, but I'll try to move on and start a new life. I'll promise you zach that you will always be my first love and will always have a space in my heart. I'll wait for my prince, just like what you asked me, but you will always be my knight in shining armor. Goodbye zach, goodbye honey. I love you...
