Chapter 2
A few nurses have visited me. It's about 8:30 PM right now, and I've been laying in bed, watching reality shows and eating pudding. I glance out the window, trying to find a peaceful view. That's exactly what I found. The full moon glimmers in the dark sky, bedding the tall city buildings in a dull light. I'm very high up, probably on the 20 floors up. A moth batters at the glass pane, wandering hopelessly to find warmth.
The door swings open, and a lean, blonde teen with a grey sweater shirt and black sweatpants races to my bedside.
"Melanie... You're... Awake!" She fumbles for my hand.
"Yeah, it's good to be back... I guess. How's it going, sis?" This teenager is my beloved sister, Tracy. She is quite popular at her school, unlike me, who is like a shadow.
"Pretty good, Morgan and Eliza and I have been hanging out lately, and Hugh and I have been dating for a while now, so, yeah." She says.
"That's good," I say, as she oddly limps to the chair next to me. "Hey, what's with the limp?"
She pauses, and hesitates.
"You have know idea, do you Melo?" She finally says.
"No, I don't... What?"
She sighs. Tracy roles her right pant leg up, revealing a metallic, hard prosthetic leg. No, no, no. I stare at her, then to her leg, doing the same process until she says something.
"I'll tell you what happened. Well, we we're heading to the mall, just me and you. We were listening to music, and I was driving perfectly. We were at the intersection, and a... (She starts sobbing) a... Huge semi runs the red light. The semi slams into us, and plows us into a coffee house. We were both knocked out, but something hard hit your head, slipping you into a coma. I twisted and broke my leg so bad that it lead to an amputation, got a concussion, and broke my wrist. I'm fine now. It turned out the driver was so drunk, that he killed somebody an hour earlier. He didn't even know it. Thankfully, he's in jail. Ugh, I'm so sorry, I wished this could never happen..." She cries, I cry, and she says something that makes me want to die:
"I miss my leg. And mom. And you."
Our mother died due to cancer many years ago. She fought, and got rid of it. But, it came back so bad that they couldn't catch up. The tumors reached her heart, and she died.
For a long time, I think about the incident. My sister has lost everything, emotionally and physically. I lost my mind for a long time, but I'm slowly getting back. We'll just have to see what I'll be like in the future.
