The moon broke through the clouds, and the four of them stood there, frozen, waiting for something to happen. They were in the middle of an open field, and it was as if a spotlight had been trained on them.    Suddenly, without warning, the sound of howling filled the air.
They began to panic, knowing the dogs were almost upon them, but more frightening than the dogs were the men who were with them.     The men who wanted them dead.
The four teenagers began running for the cover of the woods, knowing that once they were inside they had a better chance of surviving.
     They crashed through the underbrush.
Jumping over fallen logs and dodging low branches. The youngest one suddenly stumbled over a tree root, twisting her ankle as she fell.
She lay there, clutching her aching foot, all hope now gone. The others would leave her behind. Why shouldn't they? They had no attachment to each other. After all, before any of this had happened they had all been strangers. All of them coming from very different lives.       A hand appeared in front of her. She looked up to meet his dark, piercing eyes, confusion filling her. He had never shown any sort of emotion, besides intense hate for the organization they had just escaped from.
She reached up to grasp his hand, and he pulled her to her feet. She tried to take a step, but immediately collapsed as sharp pain shot through her leg. He immediately scooped her into his arms and started running, knowing they had already lost too much time. The barking grew louder as the dogs were gaining on their prey. They stumbled into a clearing, the moon shining brightly and revealing that they had stopped just inches from the edge of a steep cliff. Dark, swirling water churned below them. He paused and looked back towards the woods. Worry and fear evident on his face. He looked back at the water and then at her. She gave him a slight smile and nodded, understanding what he was thinking. He grinned widely at her and she grinned back, for once feeling completely sure. With the girl still cradled in his arms, he took several steps back and then with long determined strides he ran to edge of the cliff and jumped.
