The Doki Doki Literature Club had our first meeting today. There was only four of us, but it was the most social interaction I have participated in since being in high school. I'm a third year now. The others in attendance were all girls.
There were two second years, Monika and Sayori. Monika is the one who took the initiative to start the club. About a week ago she sought me out to be a part of her club, since I spend most of my time reading. Sayori overheard us talking from the hallway and excitedly joined in. That made three of us, but a club needs at least four members to be recognized.
Monika told us not to worry, she had someone in mind. Sayori and I waited in the classroom Monika had instructed us to be at earlier in the school day. Even though I didn't really know Sayori, I felt very at ease with her. Her bright energy spread through the room like sunlight. She asked me questions about my literary tastes until Monika entered the room with a girl I did not recognize.
She had a petite frame and striking pink bob. The red ribbons in her hair seemed to float magically about her head. I was taken aback at first that this precious girl even went to my school. Monika interrupted my internal dialogue by introducing the girl as Natsuki. She described Natsuki as a first year who she knew from frequenting the library. My eyes met Natsuki's piercing gaze causing my mind to go blank. No words would form in my head. Before I could embarrass myself further, Sayori hopped up and walked straight to Natsuki extending a hand. After introducing herself Sayori turned to me and began to tell Natsuki how I am shy but would be a great friend to her. I blushed as Natsuki looked me in the eyes once more. This time they were gentler.
"Let's get started," Monika chimed. "Today, I was thinking we could all talk a little about ourselves and what forms of literature we most enjoy! I'll start. My name is Monika, as you all know, and I started this club as a place where avid readers and writers could congregate and grow! I personally love poetry most, but I am getting into period romance novels recently. Who wants to introduce themselves next?"
"I'll go next," said Sayori. "I am not really familiar with very many types of literature, but I want to get better! I like things that really make you feel! Whether it's happy or sad, sad things are beautiful too. That's all I can think to say right now."
I looked at Natsuki wondering if I should go next to make it easier on her. I am timid, but I do not want anyone to feel pressured if I can help it. While I was still mulling it over, she began to speak. "I'm Natsuki, and I love manga. I do not care if everyone thinks it's not a real style of literature, because it is. People seem to judge manga as immature, but they obviously have never read it themselves. Manga creates a world where you can escape from reality and be free."
At that Natsuki went silent and looked to the floor. She was very bold. I have always kind of looked down on manga, but she spoke with such passion for it. Maybe I should refrain from judging something I have never read before. All these thoughts tumble throughout my brain before I realize everyone was looking at me. It was my turn, and I was just sitting there looking dumbstruck!
"Oh, I'm so sorry! I got so lost in thought just now. Um, my name is Yuri. I, uh, deeply cherish literature of all forms. I try to keep an open mind. I mostly read psychological novels that grip the reader and hold a place in their minds far after they close the book. Books are portals to new worlds where anything is possible and plausible. No matter what is happening in real life, books offer refuge."
I start to trail off, not really wanting to keep the attention on me. Monika stood up and asked us all to do the same. "Now, ladies, I would like for us to pair off to further get to know each other!" Monika grabbed Sayori's hand and walked across the room leaving Natsuki and I alone.
"I really liked how you talked about literature," Natsuki said, "I feel the same way too." "Oh, thank you," I blush, "I am very passionate about reading and writing. It seems you are too." Natsuki started to smile, "yes, I am. I'm glad I'm not alone. Have you ever read manga?" "No, but I am not opposed to it. I have no inclination as where to even start. Would you have any recomendations?" In response to this Natsuki's eyes brightened. "Yes, I will bring you some of my favorites tomorrow! I promise you won't be disappointed!" We continued to talk about the literature that has impacted our lives. I was so invested in the conversation I failed to realize Monika was standing behind me. She tapped my shoulder jarring me to reality.
"Hey girls! I'm really glad you both have hit it off so well, but it's time to go." I looked at the clock and realized Natsuki and I had been talking for almost an hour! Natsuki stands up quickly and hurriedly grabs her things.
"I'm sorry, but I have to get home. I really enjoyed talking to you." She rushed out the door leaving me longing for more conversation. Monika and Sayori also started collecting their things. Monika smiled at us, "let's meet again tomorrow!" We exited the room and parted ways. Then I was alone again. I never really mind being alone, but right now it feels unsettling.
I walk into my empty home. I have lived alone since I moved to the city for better schooling. My mind cannot rest. All I can think of is Natsuki and the literature club. I am enthused to be part of a group that brings me together with other people who enjoy the written word as much as I do.
There is something special about Natsuki, though, something that makes my mind race. I cannot comprehend what this feeling is, but it will not let up. When I close my eyes I see her emotive face lighting up as she speaks about manga. I have never even had the motivation to read manga before, but now I feel I have to. Even if just to relate to her better. Is this normal? Am I in love?
