season 1, episode 1 : new year's resolution
_____
betty sipped her iced tea slowly, she was standing outside of cheryl's penthouse, on the balcony. this was her first party, the good girl next door actually dragged herself out of the house on new year's eve to attend an event that consisted of alcohol and drugs.
but it wasn't for just nothing, archie was here. archie andrews, the only boy who created butterflies in her stomach. his jokes were terrible but she would always laugh, he would always give off a sense of happiness when she was around, he was her crush after all, her best friend. and he damn well knew that.
"hey betty." she turns her head towards the voice, and smiles slightly when she sees the familiar redhead, approaching towards her in his letterman jacket.
"hey, archie." she says. by liking him for so many years, she's learned how to obtain her emotions when he's around.
"what are you doing out here?" he asks, worriedly. archie knew betty's strong feelings for him, but he didn't want to lose her. betty was his best friend, and even if she liked him more than that, he still wanted to be apart of her life in anyway.
"just needed some fresh air." betty sighs, "what time is it?"
"almost midnight. why don't you come in and celebrate with us?" archie asks, betty shook her head.
"there's nothing to celebrate." she tells him. "so i'm fine by myself. go on in, i'm sure everyone's looking for you."
"betty," archie sighs, he hated how stubborn she was. he had a gut feeling that she wasn't telling him the truth. so he grabbed her hand, and gave it a tight squeeze. "what's wrong? and don't lie."
"do you love me archie? or at least like me, just a little?" she looks up from their hands, and she had a tear rolling down her cheek. archie felt his stomach turn into a knot, he didn't think betty would cry over him.
he looked at his beautiful best friend, betty cooper. he knew she was a beautiful young woman. with pale skin, shoulder length blonde hair that she often wears in a tight ponytail, and soft washed out green eyes that complement her skin tone, he couldn't push away the fact of them just being best friends.
"of course i love you betty." he says meaningful, she turns her head away slightly, listening to his words. "but i can't give you the answer you want."
she was heartbroken. "why?"
"you are so perfect, i've never been good enough for you. i'll never be good enough for you." he tells her, watching the salty tears only increase in her eyes.
betty's heart wasn't the only one broken, archie's was too. he never wanted to hurt betty, he loved betty and what he said was true. betty didn't hate him for not wanting her, she knew you couldn't control your feelings, because if she could. she would've stopped liking him by now.
betty turns away him, continuing to sniffle her nose and let the tears fall, looking out at the city lights. the countdown to midnight was happening indoors, but archie didn't leave her side. even when reggie began screaming his name.
"betty." he said, "what's your new year's resolution?"
she chuckled painfully, wiping the tears away from
underneath her eyes. she sucked a deep breath in before rolling four words off her tongue. "to get over you."
and then the doors flew open with everyone cheering and chanting happy new year! they got separated in swarms of people.
neither of them believed betty, she didn't even believe herself. she thought she was going to love him for the rest of her life. but only time would tell.
