I run my fingers along the sides of the wheel and glance at the stereo - 11:04 . Damn. 11:00 already ? We're running out of time if we're going to get there without getting caught ....
As I continue to nervously tap on my wheel , I get sucked out of my daze when my passenger seat door gives a loud Creak . A curly headed boy with a camera dangling around his neck hops into the car. His usually tidy curls look disheveled , like he just woke up . "Damn Cam , you spend more time on your hair than I do ." I smirk , noticing him tying up his locks in a semi-precise bun. "Alright look Ophi , we all know you wake up with perfect hair every morning but curly hair is an art okay ? Let me do me ," he articulates , as he checks his hair in the side mirror. I roll my eyes. Men - always so high maintenance.
I push the parking brake in and finish backing out of his driveway. Me and Cam DeLainey had been longtime childhood friends , who met after I ungracefully busted my ass and broke my arm in his driveway after a failed skateboard endeavor. Yikes . Ah Well , that's another story for another time. Either way Cam and I had been best friends ever since . Cam and most of my close friends call me "Ophi" , which is short for Ophelia , a name that should've been left in the Renaissance in my opinion. I mean don't get me wrong it's pretty and all - but who actually names their kid Ophelia ? Ophelia Greene just seems a little too regal for someone like me .
I try to distract my uneasiness with music and push my favorite lady Gaga cd into the stereo : 'Art Pop' . My friends and I had actually found this car at a yard sale , an old lady wanting to get rid of it . I had always wanted a Jeep and the 90s ones are really dope. It was pretty beat up , but we got these Baja blanket seat covers and painted over the scratches so it's cool looking now . The previous owner , her grandson , had started a tradition of caking car stickers on the ceiling so now every time something worth celebrating happens we add a sticker to the collection . The most recent sticker was a princess Leia one , that we got from hot topic after Cam got an invite to one of his top school choices : 'Ringling College of the Arts'. Plus it's a Cherokee so the whole gang can fit in there .
"Ophi , please this means a lot to me . Where else am I going to get the chance to get some never before seen photos like these?" He shifts towards me , "Look . don't worry about it okay ? We'll be in and out I just need some photos for my portfolio ," he smoothly added. Worrying is my forte though . My hands grip the wheel tighter .
Cam convinced me into sneaking into the abandoned 'Törtoc Boardwalk' so that he could get some more shots for his Portfolio. The boardwalk stretches through the misty woods , and goes for a couple miles . If anyone has made it to the end it's taken them several hours at the least. The only thing is no one has been there in a couple years , after it mysteriously got closed due to "weather damage" . I think it's a loud of bullshit because it's been years since any huge weather phenomenon has happened in this tiny town. It used to be a popular spot for the high schoolers to skip at but now it's just a faded memory. But , rumors now permeate the site about why it's still banned from the community . "I heard someone committed suicide in these woods" "Maybe it was a drug bust" "It's now a toxic waste dump site" "An escaped convict is on the loose" The boardwalk had now become a local legend to the community , rumors growing more wild by the day . There is probably a valid reason it's closed . You know ? Maybe its protected land now , we don't know. Stop freaking out . We're not breaking in . OH WAIT, yes we are . I shiver and slow the car down as we get close to the area.
The car lurches to a stop in front the rusty gate.
"Okay Officer Whitehood makes his search around 12:00 in the walk so we only have 45 minutes if we're really doing this," I grumble . "YESSS OKAY THAT IS PLENTY OF TIME ." He leaps out of the car and excitedly runs towards the tall gate . I step out of the car reluctantly , slowly trailing behind him. I glance behind me , anxiously looking at the empty road behind us. "You comin' or what ?" I turn back to him , realizing he's already scaled it . I guess we're really doing this. He mischievously smiles from the other side of the fence , "Come on already !" , shaking the fence loudly.
I sigh , shove my foot into a rusty notch in the fence, and start climbing.
