It was muddy outside, and Penelope knew that, but all she wanted to do was to go outside and play on her rickety swing set. Her parents were arguing, so she decided to sneak out on her own without them seeing her. Her parents always told her that she was only five and she wasn't aloud to go anywhere without them knowing. She slowly crept through the hallway and carefully opened the door that led to the backyard. She was freezing, but she knew going back inside for a jacket was a big risk. So she just ignored it and went on. She sat on the swing with glee, and started kicking her legs back and fourth. She did this for some time, until the newspaper boy rode his bike along the sidewalk. She had a major crush on him, though he was six years older than her. She always waited on the doorstep for him to go by. When she saw him around the corner, she would jump up and stand in the middle of the sidewalk, forcing him to either swerve around her or to stop and hand her the paper. He never swerved, because he knew he would tip over, but most of all, it would break the little girl's heart. He knew she likes him, because she makes it really obvious. He always stops his bike and repeats the same words he says time and time again. "Here ya' go, Miss Penelope. Hope you find something good to read." Then he hands it to her with a heart warming smile. Penelope also repeats the same lines. "Thanks, Thomas! Here you go!" Then takes a flower she picked from the neighbor's yard, and sticks it in his hair. Then, he peddles off. Penelope hops off with joy and thinks of him the rest of the evening. But today, she missed him. He seemed to have a sad look on his face while he rode by and threw us the newspaper. Penelope was devastated. She hated that she missed him, so she quickly grabbed a flower from the neighbors and ran as fast as her little legs can take. She ran and ran, following him, but often talking shortcuts. She ran into thorn bushes and tripped on large sticks. She often ran into spider webs, which she absolutely hated. But no matter what got in her way, she kept on running. She took so many shortcuts that she found herself lost in the middle of the streets.
