"Thank you so much" I say to the florist as I grab the roses and make my way out of the flower shop.
I walk down the quiet street and let the warm wind blow in my face until I arrive to the graveyard. I open the gate and take a few steps further. I look at the gravestones just standing there and looking sad. I start to wonder how often people actually come here.
I reach a black gravestone with a golden carving 'Marie Parker 1978 – 2012'. I smile slightly and close my eyes.
"Mom! Dad!" I yell when I notice leaves flying by really, really fast. "It's so windy outside! We can go out and fly a kite!"
Mom and Dad both come beside me and look through the window. I look at them impatiently before Dad says, "Quickly, let's get that kite!" I run down the stairs and get my favorite toy.
When I put my shoes on, I yell to them again. I hear my mom giggling and then coming downstairs with Dad. They both put their shoes on and run to the backyard with me. Mom takes the camera and starts taking pictures. I grab the string with both of my hands and look at my dad behind me.
"Ready?" he asks as he holds up the end of the kite.
I nod and start running as fast as I can. Suddenly, Dad lets go of the kite and I watch it fly above.
I'm so satisfied by it that I don't notice the mud puddle in front of me. When I step into it, I slip and fall down. "Maddie, are you okay?!" mom yells.
She's always so worried about me. I could only pinch myself and she would have already taken me to the doctor.
"Mommy, I'm okay," I reply when she kneels beside me. "But my panties aren't!" I giggle as I look at my clothes covered in mud. Mom giggles too before she takes me inside.
"Let's wash this muddy girl," she says and takes me into the bathroom. When I look at my reflection in the mirror, I start laughing.
"What's so funny?" Mom asks me.
"I look s-so fu-unny!" I reply between giggles.
My hair is messy and my arms and legs are covered in mud. I can't stop laughing at that funny girl in the mirror, even though it's actually me.
When I finally stop laughing, Mommy picks me up and kisses my forehead saying "You look beautiful, honey, even when you're covered in mud, I love you more than anything."
A tear slides down my cheek as I smile weakly at the memory.
"I love you too, mom, more than anything."
I feel another tear coming out from my eye. I don't wipe it, I let it fall down.
"And I miss you too, you know?" I sob and take a deep breath. "I don't know if you can hear me, mom, but I wish you'd stayed longer. I miss the way you used to read to me every night before I fell asleep. I miss the way you used to tell me that I'm beautiful every morning when I woke up..." a few more tears come out and I decide to leave. I put roses I bought beside the gravestone. "Dad misses you too," I whisper before finally walking away.
I wipe the tears away with my sleeve and walk back to my boyfriend's house. I check my phone and realize it's already 5 p.m. I start moving faster when I see I have a missed call from him. I arrive and open the door. I take up the stairs and see him lying on the couch. I quietly sit beside him.
"Where the heck have you been?" he asks me.
"Mike, I'm sorry, I-" I reply before he cuts me off "You're sorry, right, I get it, now tell me where the fuck have you been?" He sounds really mad, but I take the courage and try to start over again.
