The annoying beeping from my alarm awoke me from my slumber.
After once again another night of weird dreams I was finally able to sleep normally around 4:30am, now my alarm is insisting I wake up at 6:30am.
I guess I better drag my butt out of bed and face the day.
"Lyric, are you awake" ?
My younger sister Melody yells from our conjoined bathroom.
"Yes Mel, I'm rising & shining".
Since I feel like a zombie I think comfy clothes are going to be my style for today.
I pull my favorite brown leggings with deer antlers on them out of my drawer and my long sleeved tan thermal out of another. I slip my favorite camo hoodie over top and slide my tan Timberland boots on over my fuzzy socks.
Dressed for the day. Check.
Now to see if Melody is about done primping herself in the bathroom so I can fix my face and hair so I look at least partially alive.
"Mel, can I please use the bathroom now" ?
I ask as I jiggle the bathroom door handle.
I hear her sigh loudly from the other side.
"Yes, come in. I'm almost finished".
I walk in and see her straightening her dark brown hair in front of one of the mirrors at our double sinks. Thankfully there are two mirrors.
As I stare at my own reflection I look for common similarities between us. We are only eighteen months apart. But we really look nothing alike, no resemblance.
She has shoulder length dark brown hair that is wavy if not straightened, I have long (like clear to the bottom of my butt) extremely pale blonde hair that is always straight as a board.
She has eyes the color of almonds, mine are as blue as the ocean. She has olive colored skin and tans when the sun shines, I am pale white and burn until I look like a lobster. She is about 5'5 with long legs, I am not even 5 foot tall, when I wear boots with a heel I'm lucky to hit 4'10.
I'm not even sure where I get my features from, maybe a distant relative.
Melody resembles both of our parents.
She has Mom's hair and Dad's eyes. Dad's hair is just a shade lighter than Mel's.
Okay, enough being in la-la land. I snap out of my daze and see Mel staring at me.
"I was beginning to think you were going to spend the day in your own little world".
Mel laughed as she applied her lip gloss and left the bathroom.
I brushed my hair and pushed a brown headband onto my head. I carefully applied light makeup, using light brown eye shadow to go with my outfit.
Unlike Mel I use very little makeup and I thankfully have good skin. The only thing I apply on my lips is clear gloss or chap stick, today I went for my favorite vanilla chap stick. Satisfied with my look for the day I went back through my room slipped my camo Under Armour drawstring bag over my shoulder and headed downstairs.
I could smell pancakes from the stairs so I knew Mom was making my favorite breakfast, pancakes and eggs. As I slide onto the bench against the wall at the table Dad kissed my forehead.
"You girls don't have alot of time so eat up".
Mom said as she slide our plates in front of us.
"Oh Mom, Gavin is picking me up this morning".
Mel announced as she shoveled pancakes into her mouth.
Gavin Dasher was her boyfriend, they have been dating since seventh grade. Now they are both sixteen, in tenth grade and Gavin is a very familiar face around our house.
Here I am seventeen, in eleventh grade and single. I've dated, I just haven't been in a serious relationship. Boys at our school are mostly immature perverts and that's just not my type.
"So Lyric are you driving today or is Alaya picking you up".
Mom asked as I was finishing my breakfast.
I quickly downed my orange juice to wash my food down before I answered her.
"I'm picking Alaya up today. We're probably going to stop at Main Street after school".
Main Street Deli was the local diner and they have the best iced coffee and cinnamon rolls. Alaya and I are regulars.
"Do you need any money" ?Mom asked as she reached for her purse.
"No, I have Mom. Thanks anyway".
I said as I stood up.
Mom turned around to tell me bye and I could tell by her expression that she was about to go into worried Mom mode.
"Lyric honey, are you sleeping okay" ? she asked.
"Yeah Mom, just having weird dreams".
I heard a beep outside as Mel jumped up saying bye and heading out the door.
"I better get going, don't want to be late".
I said as I told my parents bye.
"Yep, I best be off to the office".
Dad announced as he slipped his suit jacket on.
"I'm meeting a few clients then I have court in the afternoon, so I may be a little late getting home".
He said as he gave Mom a kiss.
Dad was a attorney for a very high up law firm in the city of Easton right outside of our little town of Havenville.
We lived in a fairly small town. There are only about two hundred and fifty kids in our entire school district, that is including both the high school and the elementary school.
Everyone knows everyone, it's safe and it's quiet.
We have a handful of small stores.
We have Quik Shop, our small town grocery store. Harv's Hardware, Bella's Floral, Roy's Stop and Go (our local convenience store and gas station), Pappy's Pizza and of course Main Street Deli.
We also have our town library, bank, post office, rec center. The rec center had a small bowling alley, a small skating rink and a arcade. There was also town hall and the community center where all the little kids had their birthday parties and other gatherings.
Oh and how could I forget Havenville Theater !
It was a really small theater that mostly only played movies that are already released on dvd.
I walked out into the cool crisp fall air and climbed into Suzy, my silver 2010 Subaru Legacy.
Even though it was handed down to me when my Mom got her brand new Subaru Legacy, I liked my car.
Now off to pick up Alaya and get through my day still feeling quite zombish.
