Michelle and Kate waited anxiously for their father to get home. He would often go out of town for days on a drunken rampage for long periods of time, then end up getting in trouble and coming back home to relax. He would then let out all his rage on his kids. Michelle was making sure that Kate had everything she needed for their baby sister Shirley or Lee, Lee as they liked to call her. She was only three years old and still used diapers. Their mother had died giving birth to her and the whole two years before she was pregnant, she had been very ill from the car accident that she was in. Michelle was there during the car accident. It was her mom, her little brother, and herself. They had gone with their mom to the store then got in a car wreck that killed their brother and severely injured their mom. Their father was so upset that he had blamed Michelle for the accident and often drank his problems away then beating her afterword. It’s been going on like that for five years now, but even before that Michelle would get beat by her father because he claimed that she wasn’t his since she was born even though DNA tests showed otherwise. When she was born, Michelle’s father had only been twenty and had to give up his life to take care of her and her mom, just another reason he hated Michelle. However no matter how much her father hated her, she always took what came to her and did her best to take care of the rest of her family and never told anyone what went on for fear of separation from her siblings. But Kate did know what happened when she was gone, she had witnessed it before. When she had tried to tell someone about it however, Michelle was able to cover the story up as a bad nightmare she was having and her father was sober enough to help show that they were fine so the child abuse case was dismissed.

Kate never liked this part and began to sob quietly. She hated that her sister often took beatings to keep them safe from their father’s wrath. Michelle was now adjusting the straps of her backpack and diaper bag on her shoulders, so that she could hold the sleeping Shirley in her arms.

“Alright I think that’s everything,” smiled Michelle. She looked into Kate’s eyes to see tears being held back. She hugged her tightly and the tears fell. “Shh, shh, it’s ok,” soothed Michelle.

“I’m just afraid one day we’ll come back and you’ll be gone,” sobbed Kate.

Michelle pulled her back sternly and held her chin up with her index finger. “Hey, I’m not going anywhere ok. Besides it’s not that bad.”

“Last time he left you with a broken arm!”

“Yea, well just stay positive ok.” They heard a car pull into the garage. “He’s here, now go. I’ve already called Jo and she’s waiting for you down the street. She just got her license so be careful ok.”

“You too,” said Kate giving her a kiss on the cheek.

“Michelle you rotten piece of shit!” slurred their father.

“Go, now, out the back door,” said Michelle kissing both sisters and pushing them out. She shut the door just as her father stumbled into the house.

“Where’s you sisters?” slurred James looking at Michelle.

“Uh, well Kate went to a friend’s house to study…”

“A boy’s house?! You let her go to a boy’s house you piece of shit?!” he slapped her across the face making her almost fall. He pulled her up. “Stand up straight when I’m talking to you!”

“Yes sir,” said Michelle trying not to rub her stinging cheek. She took a deep breath. “She went to study for a test she has tomorrow, but it’s a girl’s house I swear, no boys.” James grunted going to sit on the couch. He only asked about Kate and never about Shirley. Sometimes Michelle wasn’t sure if he even knew he still had a baby girl, but never questioned it.
