Edward's POV
Chapter 3:
(That morning)
I pulled the door open to get out to the basketball courts for Gym practice before school and bumped into the one and only Bella Swan! I loved seeing her but I saw Newton was staring her down I sighed disgusted and helped pick Bella up.
I had to leave right away to deal with Newton so, I didn't help Bella pick her things up. I hope she was okay because Newton was in for it, I would make sure of that. We both had basketball practice every Monday morning and I had to talk to Coach anyway. Newton would have to wait for now thought.
I grabbed Newton and made my way to the court and gave him a hard punch on the back. "Hey Newton what's up?" I asked casually.
"Hey Cullen" He sneered. He didn't like me and vice versa. Life could be so amazing like this sometimes. The best part of all this was that when we played outside Coach would let us play street ball and fouls were allowed! This was going to be a fun game!
We started the game and Newton and I were on opposite teams so it was just getting better and better. Coach told me to pass so I did and I hit Newton hard in the stomach before going to my teammate. There were only four of Jasper, and us, Mike and his pal Chris my teammate, a quiet but amazing player.
Jasper and I shared a mutual hatred for Newton. Coach left us to practice on our own and Jasper and I started playing monkey in the middle with Newton in the middle. Chris had gotten tired of the game and left and it was just the three of us then.
Newton started screaming profanities, I walked over to him and picked him up by his shirtfront. I punched him in the face, I didn't notice thought that Coach had come back and Jasper had tried warning me but I had ignored it. It was worth every possible punishment to hit Newton for constantly harassing Bella. Coach pulled us apart but not before I gave Newton a black eye... It was worth it.
"Newton go get cleaned up" Coach yelled at him.
He turned to me and said, "Cullen, in my office NOW!" It didn't really worry me though, the season was already over and school was going to be over in two days.
After I went to his office he, told me that I need to watch my behavior otherwise I wouldn't be called back for the team next year. Frustrated I said, "I'm sorry Coach but Newton makes me so mad he picks on Bella all the time and it's really annoying."
I surprised myself by revealing so much but it was the truth. I know Edward and you just have to deal with it but not on school grounds." He came over and enveloped me in a hug.
"Edward, don't worry it'll all work out." He told me.
"I know Dad and thanks" I replied. Yes,he's letting me off easy! It was so unlike Carlisle Cullen to be okay with a fight but, I guess when it involved someone close and personal it was justified.
Just before I left though, Carlisle said, "Edward don't make a habit of this, I won't let you off as easily next time!" I just laughed and turned to leave when he reminded me to take a pass from the office to show my teacher so, I wouldn't be marked tardy.
I said okay and left to go to the office. The hallways were completely empty, first period had already started. My thoughts started to wander and I wondered how Bella was doing. Yes, I admit it I have an obsession with Bella.
I know the school doesn't think much of her but I could care less. I just love her hair and the way she laughs and the chocolate brown eyes that hide behind her glasses. She's such a kind, sweet and gentle girl she doesn't deserve what Newton dishes out to her everyday...Not for one second did I think that my actions would hurt Bella.
I should have guessed it but I didn't. I should have figured out that idiot Newton would take his frustration of losing to me and getting a black eye out on Bella. I continued down to the office in satisfied bliss at having got back at Newton and never realized that Bella needed me in AP US History class. ...
I got the pass and made my way to class. To my surprise I was just behind the teacher she told me that I didn't need the pass and that I wasn't late. I walked in and took my seat but not before checking to make sure Bella was okay. She seemed to be deep in thought, but I saw her look up when Jasper called me to sit next to him. Bella got distracted by a piece of paper that fell on her desk and didn't notice that I took the seat behind her. I read the paper from my seat and knew that I had missed something. Newton was still bothering her and he was planning something new. Didn't he ever just give up?
I guess not, people like Newton just don't give up. I wondered what I had missed and looked over at Jasper questioningly he just shrugged and mouthed to me that Newton had tripped Bella and that she had asked him if a girl had given him that black eye.
I started laughing but no one heard me because the bell rang just then to signal the end of class. I was just going to tell Bella way to go but she was already out the door. I think that Newton had her all worried. So I quickly grabbed my stuff and ran out the door too. Jasper had Algebra 2 right now with Mr. Granger so I didn't wait for him. I would catch up with him later and he probably already knew where I was going anyways.
I came in just moments after Bella and said hi to Mrs. Bolden our English teacher. I said hi to Bella, she was busy looking for a pencil in her bag and was so surprised when I said hi she dropped it. I bent down to pick her things up when a bottle rolled toward me.
She turned bright red and it was just so funny and adorable. If I laughed right then she would have been really embarrassed so I just handed it to her smiled and took my seat. Soon everyone came and class started and I wasn't really paying attention. It's not like we were learning or anything anyway.
The phone started to ring and Mrs. Bolden went to go and answer it. She listens for a while then says okay.
She told Bella that was the office and they said that the Principal wanted to see her. Bella's face went pale white but, she looked calm. I looked around for Newton but he wasn't there. I wanted to warn Bella but she had already left. I raised my hand and asked if I could go to the bathroom but, Mrs. Bolden said there was only 3 minutes left and that I should just wait until class was over.
I knew I might be too late then and there was nothing I could do but wait. I just sat and prayed that Bella was okay. Those three minutes were the longest of my life. I ran out the door as fast as I could as soon as the bell rang.
I took the same route as Bella to the office and once I got to the staircase I realized that I was too late. I watched it happen in slow motion as Bella looked up and saw Newton she tried to run but the stuff in the bucket hit her anyway.
She threw up in it and I could tell from even this far away that it smelled really bad. She couldn't see me from here and Newton was already down there so I couldn't pound the $%# out of him. I ran towards him to get him except that he and I noticed that he had a camera in his hand.
He was taking pictures! I was ready to kill him and then I saw Bella's face at first she looked angry and then she saw me and I didn't want to look like I pitied her because that would make it worse so I was expressionless.
Then that idiot Newton turned around to give me a high-five thinking it was his stupid friend Chris and I just pushed him to get to Bella but she was gone. I can only imagine how that looked to her. I ran to find her but she was gone, she hadn't even taken her stuff from her locker and she was just gone! I needed to explain to her that she had it all wrong and I wished that I could but I didn't know anything about her, except for what I learned in class from her. I knew I had to get to her before she did something rash!
