(Claire's POV)
*knock knock*
I heard someone knocking from the door. It's 4 in the morning already and who could it be? Good thing I'm binge-watching the last series of the vampire diaries and I'm still widely awake.
Wait. That must be a serial killer or a kidnapper ... or it could be a robber... or it could be a vampire! Or maybe I could just open the door.
I open the door and there I saw him. He's smiling at me with the glow in his eyes. And I couldn't help but wonder how I could fall in love with a man like George Hanson.
George is my friend. We met at the first day in college. We kind of like hated each other at first. He sometimes shut me off at discussions whenever my professor asked me something and I also to him. One time we hit each other in the hallway, I was so shocked when he said sorry to me first. I later then realized that he's not so bad after all. In fact, we have a lot in common. We like watching T.V shows, roadtrips, music and chill. He's a gentleman and I fell for him in the process.
But I don't think he likes me the way I like him. He never asked me out but we sort of like go into 'dates' as what he call it. It's like I'm hungry and then he's hungry, we're both hungry and then he'll said, "Let's go on a date in that restaurant."
We sometimes hold hands though and that gives me butterflies in my stomach but like I said, he doesn't feel the same way. And we never kissed! For him, we are just friends and no more than beyond that.
Besides, he likes this other girl named Julie. Well, Julie is an average girl next door but she's really beautiful and I'm not surprised that George really likes her. I always notice that George was stealing glances at her whenever were in the library or in the hallway.
As a friend, I always pushed him to ask and invite Julie to hang out or go on dates but he doesn't have the confidence, no matter how I try to boost it up and although it hurts me a lot. He sometimes talks to me about Julie and everything about her and I don't have a choice but to listen to him and smile and to tell him something he wants to hear.
Why can't the person I love never be mine?
I smiled at him and asked, "What are you doing here?"
"I'm joining the military."
Wait. What? George is joining the military?
"Oh wow! That's great!" I said even though I kind of like not agreeing to what just he said. "So, you're serving the country now, huh George."
"Come on, Claire! We all serve the country. Getting a job, working in a company, it's serving the country already!"
"Yeah, you're right. But unlike me and unlike other people who works in a company, we're not gonna go there and get a gun and die for our country." Now my voice sounds sarcastic and I think George noticed it.
"Are you mad?"
Mad is an understatement, I wanted to tell him. Joining the military is a very dangerous job. I'm not gonna see him for a very long time and worse he could die! No one wants to see the person they love die.
"No. It's just that, you never mentioned anything about joining the military," was all I said.
"I'm surprised at myself too, Claire. It was never my plan to enlist but then things change. I met Julie and then I fell in love with her and the next thing I know she's ..."
"She's enlisting too." Lucky Julie, a guy will do everything just to prove his love to her. Now I get it. Enlisting in the military was never George's plan but then he found out that Julie's enlisting so he's enlisting too.
