As everyone knows, James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes was a good person. He cared for his best friend in his times of need, he fought for his country and, he was an upstanding gentleman. Bucky lived his life full of mischief and pranks alongside his best friend Steve Rogers. They got into every kind of trouble imaginable. He worried about Steve almost like a mother would, seeing as he was so scrawny. It was a miracle Steve even made it to adulthood.
Yes, Bucky's life was good. But it took a dark turn when a German army called HYDRA attacked during WWII. His battalion was kidnapped and Bucky went through unimaginable feats of torture. He was rescued by his best friend who was genetically modified by then, and they were able to blindside HYDRA for a while. They were about to kidnap HYDRA's lead scientist when Bucky fell to his presumed death in the process. Steve was crushed.
Fast forward to modern day. Bucky is discovered but not as the soldier he once was. After being spotted by Steve, Bucky was no longer James Barnes. He was The Winter Soldier, the deadliest assassin of lore. Steve is relentless and he does everything in his power to get his best friend back. He even risks his life to get Bucky to remember.
It works, although there is some backlash which turns into a civil war among friends. Naturally, Steve and his best friend are battle brothers, seeing as Steve basically saved Bucky's life a second time.
