He slowly lowered the gun. His arms ached from the power of it and his ears rang with the echo of the shot.

He looked down at the woman. She was laying on her back, her legs bent at awkward angles and her eyes open, unseeing. Blood seeped through her shirt and dripped onto the floor.

"Derek."

He didn't look up at the second woman, he kept his eyes on the dark stain and spoke, "It's done."

"It was an accident, don't worry." The woman across the room took a step towards him, her hand outstretched like she was approaching a scared dog.

He tore his eyes away from the stain to meet her eyes. "We both know it wasn't," he stated. She was still advancing towards him.

"It doesn't matter now," she said. She stepped over the fallen woman's leg.

Derek didn't say anything. He had nothing to say. A woman had died before him, that would definitely matter to somebody.

She placed her hand on his arm and when he didn't move away she traced her fingers down his arm until she reached the gun. She wrapped her fingers around it and he allowed her to pull it from his grasp.

"I won't think anything differently of you," she promised. "These things happen." She opened up her purse and slide his gun inside.

Still, Derek didn't say anything.

"Let's go before things get messy," she said. She walked to the open door and looked back at him when he didn't follow.

Derek closed his eyes and saw the woman's lifeless body on the back of his eyelids.

Things were already messy
