Heads drooping from being awake so long, the three boys sat around the table, researching.
"'The baku, otherwise known as the 'dream eater', is a mythological being or spirit in Chinese and Japanese folklore which is said to devour nightmares. The baku cannot be summoned without caution, however, as ancient legends say that if the baku is not satisfied after consuming the nightmare, he may also devour one's hopes and dreams.' " Sam read from his laptop.
"Well, looks like our work tonight is done, I'm going to make myself a sandwich." Dean stood, stretching after sitting for so long. "We'll hunt that son of a bitch in the morning."
Dean left the room, leaving Cas and a weary eyed Sam at the table. Cas looked up at Sam, a puzzled look on his face.
"What are dreams, Sam?" he asked.
Sam looked up from his laptop. "Well, this guy called Sigmund Freud," he answered, "believed that dreams were windows to the unconscious."
Cas's eyes drifted around the room. Closing his laptop, Sam got up to leave, but was stopped short by another question.
"Can you control what you dream about?" The idea of seeing and hearing things while unconscious was a mystery to Cas.
"Um not really, I mean dreams are based on what you've seen and experienced - kinda like a weird movie based on your life." Sam, feeling he answered the question, left to go to bed. "Night, Cas."
"Yes, it is." Cas rightly observed, as the clock showed it was 3:32am.
Dean had been craving a peanut butter sandwich and subsequently spent several minutes looking for the jar. He hadn't noticed Cas walk in as he rifled through cupboards.
"Dean."
Dean jumped back, startled, hitting his head on a cupboard door.
"Son of a- what's up Cas?" Dean rubbed the back of his head.
"I was just wondering, if you could choose what you dream about, what would you choose?"
A smirk appeared on Dean's face as he replied, "Pie."
"I'm being serious Dean." Cas stepped towards Dean, hand outstretched, reaching to heal his head.
"No, it's okay Cas." Arm lowered, Cas stood close to Dean, looking him seriously in the eye.
Dean seemed shy, almost embarrassed about what he was going to admit, which was not helped by the closeness of Cas, nor his thoughtful gaze.
"I'd dream about the stars. I'd dream about being up there and just doing nothing except burning peacefully. I'd dream about exploring the galaxies and..." Dean faltered, unconsciously taking a step closer to Cas. "And sometimes I see myself with the stars, when I see myself in your eyes."
The constellations in Cas's eyes disappeared as he closed them, feeling Dean's lip brush over his own.
