Childhood friend.

2 1 1

There are things that I would never understand.

"Look, it's simple. We'll just have to break up..."

Even after thinking about them for days.

"Why?"

Or after asking someone who specializes in these things.

"Because..."

I still wouldn't understand.

"... Then you won't be able to figure out the angle, duh."

I'm talking about you, Maths.

I slumped and leaned my head against the cool surface of the desk, releasing a long groan.

"You know, I honestly think I was meant to be born as a worm or some other life form," I muttered, watching strands of my hair slip down from the top of my head and onto the desk in defeat.

"Even then you would fail," scoffed the voice beside me. I turned my head to glare in their direction and found my childhood friend, Constantine grinning at me.

"Come on, it isn't so hard," he said, "Once you get this, everything else will make sens-"

"No!" I shot up in my seat, startling him. "Nothing in maths ever makes sense. It's a black hole of numbers and letters that suck the soul out of your body until you are left dry with nothing more than formulas and a ticket to a mental asylum because you've officially cracked." I tapped my head as I said, "I may not be the brightest but I'm not that stupid to fall for Math's plan."

"Well, with or without maths, you're still an idiot," he shrugged, completely ignoring my whole act and begun doing his homework. I huffed, deciding that I didn't need his help and tried it on my own. The clock's ticks echoed into the empty classroom and I unconsciously tapped a beat with my pen before I got bored and closed my textbook. I watched his pen run across the page as his other hand pressed numbers into his calculator.

The room was warm with the sun's rays flickering past the curtain that was blown by the gentle, summer breeze. The peaceful atmosphere offered security and my eyes drooped close.

"Hey, Con," I yawned, covering my mouth with my hand and faced him.

He hummed in response.

"Why don't you get yourself a girlfriend?" I leaned my head onto my hand as I waited for his response.

"Academics."

"Ah, I see."

No words were spoken for a while until I yawned again and said, "Hey, Con."

He hummed again.

"If you got the chance to go anywhere right now, where would it be?" I rubbed my eyes, trying to keep myself from dozing off.

He paused as he looked around the room, his mouth moving from side to side as he contemplated.

"Well, to be honest..." He faced me with a sincere expression. "I would stay here."

"Hmm," I agreed. Silence fell upon us as we stared at each other and I felt a grin coming to the corners of my mouth.

"We haven't hung out like this for a while, have we?"

"Nah," he grinned back, "I think it's been a few months since we've actually had a proper conversation." He leaned back in his chair and shot me a cheeky smile.

"Bet ya missed me a lot, didn't ya, Al?"

"Pfft, next joke please." I sat up from my position and faced him, suddenly up for another round of our arguments.

"Hah, sarcastic as ever Alivra," he smirked and that's when I noticed something above his upper lip.

"Are you growing... A mustache?" I asked, astonished and disgusted at the same time.

"What if I am? Got a problem with it?" he asked tauntingly, his eyebrows raised in a playful manner.

"If you don't get rid of it by tomorrow morning, I won't hang out with you," I grimaced.

"I need it for Movember," he pouted. I watched his mustache with furrowed brows before meeting his amused gaze.

"Nope, no can do. I'm bringing a razor with me tomorrow and we'll see how long that wanna-be-mustache will last."

"Challenge accepted." He narrowed his eyes as I smiled. Just then, my phone buzzed and I cast a glance at the clock. My eyes widened in surprise at the time and I read the reminder of the event on my phone, mentally cursing. I quickly stood up from my chair and hurried to grab all my things.

"What's the rush? It's only 4:15..."

"I have a meeting with my dad at 5 and it's in town. You know what he's like. I'll text you later, that okay?" I shoved my books into my bag and swung it over my shoulders. I stopped in front of him with open arms, impatiently waiting for a hug.

He chuckled before slowly getting up from his seat. I looked at him in exasperation before I suddenly got pulled into his chest. At first, I was shocked but I slowly returned the hug, slightly squeezing him when I held him. The scent of his cologne struck me hard at this particular moment. It was a manly, strong smell that I couldn't recognize. We stood there for a couple of seconds before I took a step away, scolding him.

"Don't pull me in like that! Do you want me to get crushed by your chest? Beside, I don't have time for this!" I had to look up at his smug face because in the span of these few months, he grew a few inches taller. He seemed to notice this too.

"Remember the days I was your height?" He said, gesturing with his hand.

"Yeah, how could I forget? Everyone thought you were never going to grow. I guess miracles do happen," I crossed my arms, smirking as I recalled the days I used to tease him.

"Guess who's the short-shit now," he ruffled my hair before stepping out of my way for the door. "Now go, begone. I have work to do."

"Huh," I harrumphed, "I'll never understand how you could enjoy that."

I made my way to the door and just before I left, I spun around and called, "Make sure you sleep well with your hairy little friend. It won't be there the next night." Like every other time I made an exit, I sent him a kiss with a wink and left.

Hm, I thought to myself as rushed through the hallways, Constantine... Has he always been this ugly?
