I walked the dark streets of Camden with my coat tightly around me. My sneakers made a slight pat on the pavement as I left the bus station. I was walking home angry as hell from my unfortunate night. I held a mug on my face as my thoughts became deeper and deeper.
Tonight was my and my boyfriend, Jacob's, two year anniversary. Jacob said he was on a mission to rebuild our relationship, however he wasn't as committed to it as much as he seemed to be. He knew I would always be there so he didn't really partake in my feelings.
I had gotten a call from Jacob earlier in the day, telling me to meet him at the Flamin' Fry on Mercury street. That was the restaurant where we had met, and the place we went on our very first date.
Thinking that the gesture was very romantic and cute because of it's symbolism, I agreed. I had arrived right after work at 8:30 just like he asked. However, after two hours of waiting, he never showed. I called and texted multiple times with no answer. Also my car was in the shop until tomorrow, so I was left to take the bus home, in the cold, by myself.
To say I was furious was an understatement, I wanted to rip Jacob's head off. Our relationship had been struggling the last few months and I wanted to go out today and try and fix it. I was really starting to get fed up with his late nights at work.
Jacob hadn't touched me in almost 5 weeks, not even a kiss or a hug. I was starting to feel insecure. I loved Jacob and loosing him would hurt me a lot, a hurt that I was definitely scared to endure.
I walked into the tore up neighborhood that I lived in. I continued to walk to the door until I heard harsh coughing coming from behind the dumpster. In one mind, I thought to just keep walking because whoever this was could harm me, but I was drawn to see who it was. I wanted to help and it was like something in me told me to pursue my curiosity.
I slowly walked to the back of them dumpster seeing a long figure hunched over, hacking up a limb. A man, obviously, was in dirty clothes, a thin hoodie, and coughing his brains out. I immediately dropped to his aid holding him up.
"Oh my God, sir? Sir?!? Sir, are you alright?" I asked panicked.
He couldn't speak, just kept coughing really hard. I went with my first mind, I put his arm around my neck and held him up. He was heavy as hell but I managed.
"Alright, come with me and we'll get you all warmed and better," I said. I walked him to her apartment door and unlocked it. There stood my 13 stairs leading my up to the apartment.
