I don't think I could ever forget my best friends face. Thin, sickly, starved. You could almost see the bones within her face at the time of her death. She died when we were ten. Not only was my best friend dead, but also my cousin. My aunt wept each day for a year, refused to attend the funeral she payed for, and lost all contact with my mother and I. It was a terrible terrible time.
Some of the kids at school didn't know why she was gone. However, news in a small town spread quick, and eventually people figured things out. That was when chaos erupted. She was dead, and people didn't know why. All we know is that she was sick the few days before her death, and people began to panic. Someone must have poisoned the child. It must have been her mother.
My mother, Avalon, refused to believe her baby sister would slaughter her own daughter. There was no reason to. Avalon pleaded to the police to put to rest the roumors people spread, but refusal was quick. Many of them even believed my dearest cousin fell victum to foul play. They opened an investigation that never closed. All the police did was uncover terrible past secrets, and reveal our family for the hell damned demons they were.

"Allura, good to see you again," the man had said, at the time I had not much of an idea of who he was. I was only ten, and at the time I was greiving. My mother tore me away from the door and locked me in my room. Still, I was a child, and curiosity got the best of me. I listened through my door to everything they said.
My mother was mostly intelligbile, she sobbed through the interview, hearing all the terrible things that had happened to my cousin, Cara, before she died.
Though muffled, there were few things I could understand.
"The more we look into things that had been happening between your sister and her ex husband regarding to Cara, the more we are leaning towards this being a homocide," the officer said, my mother's sobbs grew louder.
"We think your sister's ex husband's new wife may have done it. There's possibility of an affair and anything and everything inbetween. Can you tell us a little bit about your sister?" the other asked.
There was a silence for a moment, I cracked my bedroom door open just a tad and saw my mother nodding and wiping her eyes with a tissue.
"She was a bit of a troublesome child. Arson was the worst she ever got caught for, they tossed her into juvy for a month and then she was home free. She got in alcohol and things like that- but murdering Cara- she would never," my mother replied.
"What about her ex husband, Braydon?" the other man replied.
"He was the one I worried about. He smoked in the house, drank far to often, didn't have a job. I was worried one day he would get drunk and hurt Cara, but he never did. If he didn't then, I see no reason for him to have now."
"You're daughter? Could there have been an accident she didn't talk to you about?" an officer answered.
"No, never, no," my mom shot back.
"Could she know something, anything?" the officer continued.
"I-"
Before my mother could finish, the man spoke again, "May I talk to her?"
"No, don't go near my baby girl," my mom defended.
"Don't worry, Avalon, we just want a few words," the man stood from the seat and I shut my door. I ran back over ot my bed, pretended to read. When the officer walked into my room, I looked surprised.
"Hi, Allura, can we talk?" he asked.
"Yeah," I replied.
"My name is Officer Harver, I need to know a few things about your cousin Cara."
"Okay," I mumbled, I shut my book.
"Cara and you were close, right?" he asked.
"Yeah, she was my best friend," I replied.
"So she told you everything, then, yes?"
"Yeah," I was starting to wonder what he was going to ask.
"Did she ever tell you about something bad, then make you swear to never speak about it?"
"No."
I lied.
Five years later and still no one knows the truth.
