The Trees

I changed my focus to Trevor. "I was orphaned when I was three and I got adopted when I was six. My foster parents had eight other kids, all adopted too, but they only wanted us because they got money for it. When I was sixteen, I started to drink a lot and abuse drugs. One night I went to a huge party at my friend's house. I was ready to get messed up to forget about my shitty life at home. I was already drunk when I got to the party, but I still drank some more. I smoked a spliff and a few cigarettes. I even hooked up with three girls. At about one in the morning, we all heard police sirens squealing in the distance. Everyone booked it out of there, but I couldn't get very far or go very fast. I ran my hardest and almost made it out of the street when a cop car pulled up next to me. The cop arrested me and stuffed me in the back of his car. I got in and saw my mate, Lucas," he fist bumped Lucas who told his story. "I am the middle child of eleven kids. My twin brother is a prodigy and the perfect child. I'm constantly being compared to him, and I hate him. I decided to become the 'invisible' child. Eventually my family basically forgot about me, and I gained a lot of freedom. I started hanging out with Trevor, and I got drunk and high a lot. Then Trevor told me about this epic party, and I decided to go. I got absolutely wasted and was dancing on tables and made out with random girls. Then we heard the police, and I started running out of there. I barely made it out of the driveway when I got arrested. Soon my mate, Trevor, got picked up and we got taken down to the station. It was an awesome night!" laughed Lucas. I looked around and saw everyone asleep underneath the comfort of the trees. I looked at Jaime and heard her voice in my memory. "I had the perfect life. I had two happily married parents, and two perfect siblings. I loved art, mostly painting. I even went to a school for the arts. When I was fourteen my baby brother was murdered by a group of white teenagers. They thought he was going to cause trouble because he was a black kid in a white neighborhood. After he was killed, I grew depressed. I started hanging out with a different crowd at school. They convinced me that I needed a bigger canvas to paint on. I began to do graffiti on walls. I was arrested once or twice, but I continued because people started to pay me. I was just starting on a job for a well-known gang in town. I didn't even hear the cop pull up behind me. He arrested me, and since this was my third time, I was declared an ASBO." I was brought to reality when I felt a rough hand touch mine. I looked up to see Marcus. His story was a rough one, he'd gone through a lot. "My mum died giving birth to me, and my dad always blamed me. I guess it really was my fault. My dad was a major alcoholic and loved to abuse me. I knew I deserved the abuse, and I'd abuse myself too. Then my dad started going through a cigarette phase and he'd burn me a lot. I stole his lighter just so he wouldn't burn me. Then one day he was screaming and hitting me looking for his lighter. I pulled it out of my pocket and asked him, 'You mean this?' and I lit the house on fire. My dad ran outside and locked me inside the house. The flames were getting bigger and I started trying to knock down the door. I finally knocked down the door, but not before a flame licked my leg. I ran to the hose and tried to put out the fire. When the flames were gone, I started to feel the burn on my leg. The firemen, ambulance, and police finally arrived. My dad told the police that I burned down the house and he was the one who saved it. They knew it was my first offense, so they just made me an ASBO." I recalled him saying. I haven't told anyone my story, except for Marcus. I sat under the tree, watching everyone sleep. I stared falling asleep, when I heard Jaime let out a Bloodcurling scream.
