At school Lula is called "Nazi", "Jew Murderer" and many other taunts. It hurts. She knows what happened during World War II and she is offended by the other kids' behavior. She does not talk to anyone about this because she is afraid - afraid of being beat up. One day, Lula was walking across a long bridge heading home from school, the bridge looked beautiful, and it had a wonderful view of the Green Mountain. While Lula was enjoying the beautiful colors of the changing leaves, she was confronted by a group of girls who teased her immensely. "Hey Jew killer," said one girl.
"Where ya goin?" said another. "Gonna go cry to yo mama?" The girls laughed. Lula, shedding many tears, rushed through them. The girls just stood there laughing.
As soon as Lula got home she ran into her small apartment bedroom. She lay down on her bed, crying. Nobody was home, her mom was out shopping. Lula laid there, tears crawling down her cheeks like raindrops on a window. She thought about the bridge. She thought she may take a walk... "No," She said to herself. "I can't do that... I can't." She sat up, looking at her backpack. "Should work on my homework I guess..." Just then, she heard the door close. "Mom's home." She wiped the tears and went to welcome her mom.
"Hey Lula," Said her mom. "How was... are you okay? Why are your eyes red?"
"Too much wind in my eyes coming home." Lula lied. She grabbed some grocery bags and went to the kitchen, her mom following.
"Don't lie to me Lula, have kids been bullying you again?" Lula kept quiet. "Hun, talk to me, are you being bullied?"
Lula looked at her mom, trying to hold back the tears, unsuccessfully. "Mom, they're calling me the same names... just like the other schools."
Her mom flared up in anger. "This has to stop, I'm going to the school with you tomorrow, you and I are going to have a chat with the principal."
Lula hugged her mom, tears still falling. "I... I just can't handle this anymore, I don't know what to do."
Lula's mom looked at her and wiped her tears. "Listen Lula, we are going to fight through this, we are not moving anymore, we are going to get some help."
"Okay mom." Lula agreed. They finished unpacking the groceries and went on with their day.
