Luke's POV

"God, this is so boring," I groan. I lean back in my chair, holding my desk to prevent myself from falling.

"Well, how about you and I ditch this and have some fun?" The girl behind me, Haley, suggests. She twirls her long blonde hair and bites her lip seductively. She's definitely pretty, but I feel no ounce of attraction towards her.

"I can't. Class has already started." I say with a shrug. She pouts.

"But-"

"Luke, Haley, please pay attention. I know you get good grades, but there is a participation grade." Mr. Richard, our Literature teacher, says. I give him an innocent smile.

"I always pay attention, sir." I say. He sighs, shaking his head.

"Just face forward and, please, don't lean in the chairs." He says tiredly. He goes back to his podium and starts going through his papers. I wonder if those are our essays. I remember one time I wanted to see if he actually read all those essays he makes us write and put in some bogus story and called him Mr. Richy-Rich. I promptly got an F and told not to call him that. I see him pause on a paper, re-reading it. Must be extra stupid. Mr. Richard is a hard-ass when it comes to writing. He also has high-expectations. Thankfully, I've kept his of me low.

"Is Jace Dupain here?" He asks, scanning the class. Jace Dupain? Why don't I recognize that name? I know everyone.

"He's skipping again!" Someone calls out. Again? Mr. Richard sighs.

"I figured. He always writes the best pieces, but is always absent." Mr. Richard mumbles. "Well, if anyone wants to see an example of a perfect piece then I'll leave this on the board." He says clipping it to the white board. Wow, I've never seen him so proud of one of our writings. Must be good.

After class I go up to look at Jace's paper. Maybe I can figure out how to turn my B into an A. The first thing I notice is that it's half the length is should be.

"Mr. Richard?" I ask.

"Yes?" He asks turning towards me.

"Weren't we suppose to write a full page? This is only like half." I point out. He grins like I revealed something important.

"That's the thing, Mr. Castel." He says eagerly. "Mr. Dupain was able to do so well in half the space as the rest that I didn't care that he didn't write a full page!" He says excitedly. "It was absolutely brilliant." He says calming down. I nod, still not fully understanding. I turn back to the paper in question. The paper is brilliant. It was full of beautiful imagery and perfectly written, but... It's so sad...

...

"What's up, Mikey!" I say happily as I get to my last class period. Mikey's my best bro. We've been together since first grade. Upon my arrival he turns to me and gives me a goofy smile.

"Hey-a, Luke." He answers in reply and returns my offered knuckle bump.

"So, I have a question." I say settling down. He quirks his eyebrow.

"What? Need some sports tips?" He teases. I laugh.

"This is Luke Castel you're talking to! People come to me for sports tips!" I joke playfully shoving him.

"I know. I know. What do you actually need?" Mikey asks.

"I wanted to see if you knew a Jace Dupain? He's in my literature class and somehow I've never heard of him." I ask him and Mikey's mouth drops open.

"You don't know Jace Dupain?" He asks in shock. I nod. "I share like five classes with him, but I hardly ever see him in class."

"Really?" I ask. "How have I never noticed him?"

"I don't know, but he's bad news. I mean it Luke. Stay away from him. And by no means are you allowed to go growing a crush on him. I know how you are with the dark and scary types."

"What do you mean?" I ask feeling offended.

"Remember your first boyfriend? The one that got arrested?" Mikey reminds.

"That was eighth grade, Mike. I was young, dumb, and infatuated. Plus he had a motorcycle!" I complain.

"He was also a senior that was busted for cocaine." He says flatly. I cringe.

"Not one of my best choices, but it was definitly an enlightening time." I say.

"T.M.I." He says. "I'm serious though. Jace is bad news." Now, Mikey is a big guy. Three inches taller than myself making him six foot two as a junior and twice as buff as me.

"Don't worry. I've never even seen the dude. I was just curious. Mr. Richard praised him and you know how much of a hard ass he is." I explain. He looks relieved.

"Good." He says. "Jace isn't originally from our grade. He skipped a few grades so, that might be a reason why you don't know him. Also, I don't think anyone refers to him by name. They all just call him "The Emo"." Mikey explains. Hmmm. I open my mouth to ask more, my intrest peeked, but the teacher decides to start class.

Of course my mind is anywhere but class as I try to conjure up Jace Dupain. If they call him "The Emo" he probably wears like all black and has black hair that covers his face. Maybe black eyeliner and some face piercings. He's probably super tall if he scares even Mikey. I'm pulled from my thoughts by the bell. Time for practice. If I time it right I can make it to softball and football practice. Quickly, I run to my locker and grab my stuff. On my way I bump into someone causing them to fall.

"Watch where you're going!" I say out of reflex, though I was probably the one in the wrong.

"Sorry..." The boy whispers. He's tiny and maybe kind of cute, but he hides his face. I stare at him for a half a second before carrying on to my practice as he starts to pick up his stuff. That might have been a bit of a dick move, but it's just some freshman right?
