It has been years since Maddie and I moved from one place to another, trying to find a perfect spot for us to settle down. The rover worked just fine as long as the sun still shine. Ever since praimfaya the Earth changed a lot. Many plants died, most of Earth looked inhibitable, but one that confused me the most was how the land shifted. It was as if I stumbled upon new land each time.
"I need to pee." Said Maddie.
I hit the brake and looked back.
"Go!" I said.
She hopped out and ran behind a tree. I stepped out the rover to stretch, with a riffle in one hand, just in case. Suddenly I heard footsteps. The sound of someone walking on leafs trying to be as quiet as possible.
"Don't even try!" I shouted and got my riffle ready.
"Maddie! Maddie, let's go!"
The footsteps were everywhere. There were many of them, I hoped they were people and not some radioactive animals. I panicked when Maddie did not answer and just when I was about to run for her I was greeted by a dog, a big one. I was not quite sure what breed since we did not have them in space, but I learned about them and their behaviors. It growled at me ready to attack.
"No!" A girl ordered after she whistled at the dog.
"Who are you?" She asked.
"Who are you?" I asked back.
Her outfit was just like the other grounders except the layers were fewer and thinner, as if not built for cold weather. Three red lines across her hazel left eye like scars but it was paint. Her hair black as night, long and braided on each sides. She had a spear in one hand.
"You are trespassing. Go back now." The girl ordered.
"It's the end of the world. I can't believe we're still doing this." I said and looked around to notice that we were not alone. Around us were spies, up on the trees ready with their bows and arrows aimed at me.
"They'll kill you. Please, just go." She begged. It was a sincere request, I could see it in her gentle eyes. She didn't want anyone to have to die.
"It has been 6 years until I finally meet another human being. Please, let us stay." I cried.
Another footsteps were heard. The soldiers on the trees aimed their arrows the other way. The girl drew her sword and turned around. From the bushes out came Maddie.
"No, it's ok! She's with me, come here." I said as Maddie ran towards me confused and scared.
"A child." She said.
"Yes, please. Just for a few nights." I begged again.
"Just because you're traveling with a child." She said.
My eyes lit up as I looked at Maddie who was still confused of what was going on.
"Who are these people?" She asked.
"I don't know. I don't wanna know." I said as I followed the girl deeper into the woods.
