I wake up to the darkness of my room and the sound of rain pouring outside. Great, I'm not going to be able to sleep anymore. I sat up and swing my legs over the side of the bed and walk to my dresser. I pull out my favorite band shirt, flannel and ripped jeans and get ready for school. I look at the clock and I have an hour to kill. Great. I sit down on my bed and look around my room. The stars that are stuck to the ceiling still slightly glow in the darkness and I start to stare at them. I tend to do this a lot. Random thoughts find their way through my head and I begin to cry. Not heavily but the tears slowly slide down my face and memories pour in leaving my broken yet again. I turn to the alarm clock and there's ten minutes until I leave. I stand up and walk to the body length mirror beside my closet. I wipe the tears from my eyes and use concealer to cover up the red blotches under my eyes. I brush out my short, wavy, brown hair and pull it into a ponytail. I grab my phone, charger and headphones and walk out of my room. I walk into the kitchen and put my charger and headphones in my bookbag sitting in my seat at the table. Mentally checking things off in my head I walk to the bathroom and brush my teeth. I check the time in my phone and say goodbye to my still sleeping parents. I grab my bag out of the chair and walk to the door grabbing my keys off the hook. I walk out into the rain and get into my car. I start the engine and hook my phone up to the auxiliary. I shuffle through several songs and decide on Fake Smiles by Phora. The music starts to play and he begins to rap, I join in as I drive down the long, winding driveway. I start to drive down the road when the voices in my head started to talk again. I continue to drive and turn the music up trying to block them out. I turn into a coffee shop and cut the engine. I grab my wallet, phone and keys and go inside. Its warm and dimly lit inside. I found this place my freshman year when I skipped class one day. It's been my favorite place ever since. I walk to my seat in the back by the wall of books. I grab the one I was reading yesterday and place it on the table in front of me. I get up and walk to the counter and the waitress knows me by name. "Good morning Adeline." She says as cheerful as always.
"Morning Hannah." I reply as cheerfully as I can manage. I smile but I know she can tell it's not genuine. "I take it you want the usual? Maybe stronger today." She asks with a wink. "That'll be great, thank you." I hand her a $10 and walk back to my seat. I open the book and get lost in the pages and paragraphs. Hannah walks over and places my egg sandwich and coffee down. "I added a little something to your coffee. You look like you could use it. Also I got new stuff if you want to hang out after work." "Sure, and thank you." I smile and she nods and walks away, making sure to put a little extra shake in her ass. I go back to my book and eat my sandwich. A few guys come in and I pay them no attention. Like usual. I finish my sandwich and close my book. I look up as I hear the door of the shop open again. This time all the time in the world stopped and I saw the one person that I knew I had to talk to. She walked over to the table beside mine and looks cold. I down my coffee and walk over to her table. "Hi, um...I...well..." I stammer and shove my hands in my pockets and turn around. I start to walk to the door and I hear a small giggle. I smile and debate turning around and Hannah gives me a look of terror. I turn around quickly and see the guys at her table surrounding her. Her body shaking and her eyes filled with fear. I stride over and place one hand on the biggest guys shoulder. He turns to me, looks me up and down and smirks. Big mistake. "Would you like to join us little lady? We've got room." He says with a wink. I tighten my grip on his shoulder and he winces in pain. "How about you leave her alone and your guys and I can take this outside." Murder is written across my face and my eyes are ice cold. He stands up and is clearly bigger than me but it's never stopped me before. His men stand up as well and I walk outside. They follow. "You're making a big mistake here little girl." The biggest one says as he cracks his knuckles. "I highly doubt that." He swings his fist at me and I block and kick landing it right in his ribs. He groans and one of his men comes at my from the right. His arms swing as he tries to grab me, I duck below his arms and come up with a solid uppercut to his jaw. Feeling and hearing a satisfying crunch. He yelps and grabs his jaw. The last guy looks at me, trying to hide the fear behind his eyes, I smirk and he flinches. I step towards him and he stands taller. I hear as the biggest guy tries to stand up. I shuffle around his body and grab the other guy. I throw him over my shoulder and then punch the biggest one in the nose as he tries to sneak up behind me. I looked at them all as they lie on the pavement. "If you ever even think about talking to her or any other girl like that again, I will come after you and make sure you learn your lesson next time." I say my voice filled with venom, disgust and hate. I walk back inside of the shop and I can see her in her seat trembling, Hannah over there trying to comfort her. Okay, I can do this. I walk to her table and my hair falls in my face. I didn't even realize that my hair had fallen. Shit! I don't have another hair tie. Oh well. I tuck my hair behind my ear and continue walking. I reach her table and she looks up at me with eyes the color of the ocean on the clearest day. Her short hair fallen into her face and a small smile on her lips. I melt in the look she gives me. Her eyes showing a little sadness, pride and something that I couldn't put my finger on just yet. I smile and then grab my keys off the table I was sitting at and walk towards the door.
