Okay, this is the first one shot I've ever written, so apologies in advance in case anyone dies of cringe😂. (This is a human/college AU by the way)(Princey is meant to be bi in this one as well).
All Roman had wanted was a normal, peaceful night out.
Instead, what he got was probably one of the wierdest experiences of his life.
He and his friends had decided to go out to a bar in the town, just for fun, nothing big, when Patton and Logan had just had to leave him alone for ten minutes.
The exact ten minutes his ex-girlfriend walked through the door and spotted him.
'Fancy seeing you here, stranger'.
Roman places an expertly feigned smile on his face, blessing his acting classes, and turned to face his newfound company.
'Natalie, hey. Talk about coincidences, huh?' he laughed a little, trying-and failing-to sound carefree. 'Would you, uhm, want to sit down?'
Please say no. Please say no.
She smiled widely and said, 'Sure!'
Finding a comfortable position on her stool, Natalie began asking about Roman's classes.
'Oh, eh, school's ok, there's this big play thing going on, we have to preform in these random roles that make no sense together but find a way to make it work. It's meant to be worth 30% of our end of year grade or something. How about you?'
They continued like this for about half an hour, chatting about this or that like old friends, and eventually Natalie asked the one question he had not been wanting at all.
'So, are you, ah, here with anyone tonight, or-'
'Hey there, Princey'.
Roman looked up at the sound of the familiar nickname. Virgil, the only friend that decided against joining him going out that night, was standing a few feet away with a signature smirk on his face and hands in his pockets as he walked towards the two.
Just as Roman was about to ask why Virgil had changed his mind about going out, he was stunned into silence by Virgil placing a quick kiss on his cheek.
Roman's eyes went wide, and he hoped his face wasn't as red as it felt as he tried to speak.
'Why-?Virgil, what-?' he took a breath to get himself to stop stammering. 'What was that for?'
Virgil scoffed as he took a seat on the stool he had dragged between the other two. 'What, so I need an excuse to kiss you now?'
The look on Natalie's face pretty much mimicked how Roman felt. It wasn't until Virgil turned to face her and introduce himself that Roman's mind officially felt like it was melting.
'Virgil', he said, sticking his hand out in a strangely confident way for his usual quiet self. 'I'm Roman's boyfriend'.
Wait, what?!
Roman stared in shocked silence as Natalie and Virgil began talking.
'Oh, I didn't know Roman had a boyfriend! Roman, why didn't you mention this sooner!'
He tried to smile even though he was internally screaming. 'Must have slipped my mind'.
'Wow, I'm that important to ya huh?' Virgil rolled his eyes, but he leaned up to give Roman another kiss on the cheek, except this time he whispered, 'Just play along. I'll explain later'.
Roman smiled to himself. He wasn't sure what Virgil was doing, but he knew one thing: he was an actor. 'Playing along' was his forte. He could do this.
He changed his expression into a cocky smile. 'So, Natalie, you got your own Virgil yet?'
She smiled a little. 'No, I've decided to stay off the market for now. But, really, I gotta ask–how did you two meet? No offence but I so didn't picture you with someone so.. different?'
The two glanced at each other, and Roman could see from Virgil's face that he expected him to do the talking for this one. Ok, an idea would be nice right about now.
Might as well go with the truth. Mostly.
'Well, we met through our friend, Patton, and we didn't exactly, ah, "get along" at first-'
'He means we hated each other's guts', Virgil put in jokingly. Roman just rolled his eyes at him even though his brain was screaming about how cute he was.
'As I was saying', Roman continued, 'We fought constantly, until one day I decided to actually tell Virgil that the whole reason for me complaining about everything he ever did was because I had no idea how to ask him out, so I just tried to get as much attention from him as I could, be it positive or negative'.
Roman was about to spin up something without even a little truth to it, as everything he had just said was exactly that. True. Every time he had ever picked holes in Virgil's clothing, taste in music, anything, he just did it because he had no idea how to say what he really wanted to:I love you.
But, before he could say another word, Virgil cut in and finished the story for him.
'And I had no idea how to react to that, big surprise, so instead of talking I just kissed him and ran away. Queue the anxiety, am I right?' he laughed a little before continuing. 'The next day Patton called us both over to his and locked us in a room together because he "just couldn't stand us fighting all the time", and this one-' he nudged Roman on the shoulder '-actually asked me out properly this time around. And since it's pretty much impossible to say no to that face, I agreed. We've been going out ever since'.
Natalie was smiling and staring at the two as if they were the cutest couple she had ever met. 'Wow, are you two cute or what? Seriously, you guys are really adorable'.
After another half hour, Virgil got a text from Patton asking where he was. 'Welp, looks like Mr Father-Figure needs me. I'll see you guys later, I guess'.
He went to give Roman another kiss on the cheek, but this time Roman's head shifted just fast enough to catch Virgil's lips in his own.
'What, so I need an excuse to kiss you now?' Roman smirked when his emo counterpart just huffed out an 'ugh' and walked away, failing miserably at hiding his smile.
'Like I said: Really adorable'. Roman had almost forgotten Natalie was there.
Later, Roman found Virgil waiting outside the bathroom door for Logan before they went home.
'Hey, Virgil? Can I ask what all that was about? Y'know, the whole "boyfriend" thing?' Virgil looked up from his phone.
'Oh. Well, I decided to come join you guys anyways, but when I got here Patton pointed you out to me, and that girl was with you, Natalie? She was talking to you, and Patton said she was some ex-girlfriend of yours. He wanted me to go over and pretend to be your boyfriend in case she tried to ask you out or something. I don't really know why...' his voice trailed off. Now Roman just had to ask his last question, which was significantly harder.
'So... Virg. Y'know, I think that we, uh, made a.. pretty good couple, in my opinion'. Virgil just looked at him.
'And, I was, wondering, if you would want to.. try it out.... for real? Some time?' Geez, Roman thought, how hard is it to get a few words out?
'A.. are you...' Virgil's face was almost unreadable: Roman couldn't tell if he was scared, offended, or maybe exited. His eyes flitted between both of Romans as he finished his sentence.
'Are you asking me out?' Roman nodded. Once again his signature smirk crossed Virgil's face. 'Hm. Sure Princey. Why not? I mean, we did make a pretty good couple, after all. In my opinion, at least'.
