She walks hurriedly west down the seemingly never-ending hallway in a rush to her first class as the minute bell rings. Her salmon pink and crisp white spring floral dress swishes back and forth as her high-heeled feet take rapid turns in front of the other. The smooth blond waves that frame her face bounce energetically off her back, leaving puffy clouds of Daisy by Marc Jacobs floating down the hallway.

He walks in the east door, just after the minute bell rings. There is no purpose to his steps. He walks as if he has nowhere to be, no one to impress. He wears a crumpled up leather jacket that looks as if he just pulled it out of the laundry (even though any dedicated leather owner knows that it cannot be machine washed). The denim jeans on his legs look as if they fit at one point, but they now hang casually loose because of the rips and tears. The heavily gelled mohawk sticking up six inches off his head draws strange looks from others in the high school hallway, but he doesn’t pay them one bit of attention. He doesn’t care.

The hallway quickly clears, once the final bell rings. Her steps become faster, and faster. “Oh, no,” She sighs, and then she sees him. At the exact same moment that he sees her. You couldn’t miss her, she was one of the prettiest girls in school, as well as smartest. She was a hard working straight ’A’ student, with perfect attendance, not to mention perfect hair. He was, well, quite the opposite. ’C’ average student, terrible attendance, always late. However, she had never seen him, nor had he seen her.

Her eyes linger on him momentarily, curiosity running through her mind as to why he would catch her eye, but he quickly looks away. He struts down the hallway as if he owns it. But not in a cocky, jerk way. It’s more of a ’This is who I am, take it or leave it’ way. Shocked, and a little hurt, by his silent dismissal, she quickly shakes it off and turns her attention back to getting to class. The apology to her teacher forming in her head.

“So sorry Ms. Bates! I had a terrible time getting my locker open this morning. It’s just one-of-those-days. I hope I didn’t inconvenience you,” she says as she shuffles quickly into the room, taking her seat.

“Quite alright, Evelyn. Make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Ms. Bates answered as she turned back to her lesson on Algebraic equations. Pink gel pen in hand, and pink notebook paper on desk, Evelyn quickly scribbles down everything that was written on the white board. She needed to do everything that she could to get a more than good grade in AP Algebra 2. Education was everything, and without an education, well, teachers made it seem as though you were nothing.

“That is all for today class, don’t forget that your five page essay on Pythagoras is due next Wednesday,” Ms. Bates called as the squeak and groan of chairs being pushed back into the desks spread across the room.

“Hey, Evelyn! What was with that?” Nicole asked as she followed her out of the classroom.

“What was what?” she replied.

“You were late. You’re never late.”

“Bad morning, I got up late.”

“Oh, I’m sorry! Are we still on for lunch like normal?”

“Yup, see you then!”

“Bye!” Nicole waved as she walked off in the opposite direction. Evelyn walked quickly down the hallway so that she wasn’t late to her second hour as well, and sure enough, there was the same guy from that morning, heading straight at her. Was he going to talk to her? Why was he walking so quickly? Her heart started beating so fast that she thought it would burst out of her chest, and she had no idea why. She’d never even talked to him before. Why did she care all of the sudden? He got closer and closer, the scent of his Ed Hardy cologne conflicting with her Marc Jacobs, like a cat fight in midair. But as he got within feet from her, he didn’t look at her for even one second, and stormed right past, almost running down several people with his speed. Hmmm that was weird… She thought, as she continued to Literature.
