Hello, my name is Mai Maryam and this is a story of my past, how I discovered the rest of my abilities and found my split personality. It all started in Green Rock Valley, where I grew up. I lived in a small, rustic, two-story cottage with my parents, Cana and Jake Ackerman, and brother, Kyo Kamiya. You can probably guess by now, but Kyo and I are adopted. We grew up in the same orphanage and were adopted by Cana and Jake when we were 15. Though the fact we were adopted because we don’t share a last name is obvious, you could also probably tell because we all look completely different. Cana has long, smooth, red-ish brown hair, bright rust brown eyes, and peach colored skin with a fashion model figure. Jake has short, wavy, strawberry blonde hair, sky blue eyes, and sun-kissed tan skin with a thin but noticeably muscular figure. Kyo has short, messy crimson red hair, golden topaz colored eyes, and pale porcelain skin with a thin, toned figure. Finally, I have long, silky, deep violet hair that is usually in a braid, emerald green eyes, soft ivory skin with an hourglass model figure, and a strange mark around my right eye that I cover with a light grey half-mask, resulting in my nickname being Mask. A year after we were adopted we met a well toned, pale skin, girl with short silver hair, and ocean blue eyes named Kristen Morris and became best friends with her. That year we became really close and did everything together, we were practically sisters.

It was an eerie, fall day when we were juniors in high school, the three of us were walking home together like always. “You know this feels like a great plot for a horror story, don’t you agree Mask?” Kristen asked me. I replied, “Yeah, a perfect plot. Three students walking home from school one cloudy afternoon, only to run into a psychopathic murderer who pounces them and rips  them to pieces!” and jumped on my brothers back giggling. “Hey, don’t do that! Do you know how bad that sounds, especially with the Phantom Shredder on the loose?” Kyo scolded us, me in particular.

Lately there has been a string of murders happening through a few different towns scattered across the country, including some in our town. The murders were all by one person who cuts open his victims and removes all their organs while leaving no evidence. The police have named him the Phantom Shredder due to the fact he randomly shows up in a random town each night and commits the crime leaving no evidence, except eye witnesses or video evidence of him coming and going.

“Hey Mask, did you have any weird dreams recently?” Kristen looked at me, curious to know if anything will happen. Kristen is one of the few people that I talk to about my dreams, other than my family. You see, sometimes my dreams are visions of the future but I don’t know how far into the future they will take place. “Well, I did have one but I couldn’t clearly make out anyone. All I can say is that a family will die in this town soon, and Kyo and I will be witnesses,” I admitted, but I refused to say how scared and upset I felt when I woke from that dream. Kyo looked at me and put a comforting hand on my shoulder, “Well let’s just hope it isn’t too soon.” I nodded in agreement. The next night we went next door to Kristen’s house, only to find her parent’s bodies ripped open with their organs spewed out around their corpses in the living room. Suddenly hearing my best friend screaming from the kitchen, I rush into the room. Once I get there I see the Phantom Shredder, standing above her cold, lifeless body. He had short messy black hair, blood red eyes, and pale ghostly skin which was complemented by a navy blue hoodie, denim jeans, and black combat boots. Looking up from her fresh corpse, the man lunges at me only to run straight into the wall behind me as I dodge.

As he stood up he threw my mask aside, having grabbed it when I dodged him, and turned around to face me. Suddenly I began to change and my sanity slowly started slipping away. My once deep violet hair became as black as night, my emerald eyes became gray pools filled with madness, and the mark on my face started to faintly glow. Having fully changed I noticed an unknown power flooding into me. Deciding to try this new power, I leaped at my friend’s killer and latched onto him right before he teleported away. We ended up in an abandoned field, though I didn’t let it faze me as I was set on stopping my target. I scratched him with my nails, the sound of his clothes ripping, skin tearing, and pained screams echoed through the air. I then jumped back and saw the wound I gave him beginning to fester and rot, the scent of the decaying flesh mixed with the metallic scent of blood drowned the beautiful fragrance of the flowers and trees. The sensation of the warm, red liquid lingered on my fingertips as it slowly dripped to the ground. It was obvious he was struggling to stay standing, but he was fueled by his will to end my life.

Soon a feminine voice spoke in my mind, “Finish him now… He killed countless people, he murdered your best friend. End him now, but make it slow and painful. He doesn’t deserve to live.” Confused and startled by the voice I shook my head. “No one deserves to die, he may be a murderer but I just can’t kill him.” “If you don’t he will kill more people and even you… He knows what you look like, he knows what Kyo looks like.” I froze as the voice spoke. It had a point, but I just couldn’t bring myself to end a person’s life. The voice sighed, “Fine if you won’t kill him, I will!” At that moment, I had lost complete control of my body. I held out my hand towards the man, his blood still on my hands. “The hell? You think holding your hand out at me is going to do anything?” the man groaned. All of the sudden my hand moved and became a fist, at the same time the man’s arm had exploded. Blood went flying everywhere, it even splattered on my face and clothes. “Such a shame that this beautiful color flows through those hideous veins of yours,” the voice said as it let out a bone chilling laugh. Next thing I knew, the Phantom Shredder had been blown to pieces, literally.

Nothing but his head remained as I soon regained control of my body. “Who are you? How did you do that?!” I questioned the voice. “I am you, well your split personality that everyone in your biological family ends up acquiring. I’m whoever you wish to call me, now that I have awakened,” it replied. “So basically, I’m halfway insane and you represent the inner psychopath, and I have to name you?” “Exactly!” “What do you name a bloodthirsty sicko?” “I don’t know, you’re the one that has to name me.” After that I began to ponder a name for her as a friend of my mother’s came and took me home.

As soon as I walked through the front door, I was tackled to the ground by Kyo and my dad. “Okay you two give her space, she just lost her friend and from the look of her attire, fought the killer,” Cana stated as she chased them off after pointing out my blood stained, and slightly disordered, clothes. Once the two grown babies are pulled away from me, I sit up and tell her everything that happened. Once she learns the whole story she pulls me into a hug and then gives me a ring as she said, “I knew it was only a matter of time, take this ring and it should keep her sealed. As for her name how about Midna?” “Perfect! Thank you mom,” I say as I hug her then place the ring on my finger. Unknown to me, that was only the beginning of my fate to come.
