Chapter 2

Rowan was out of her seat and walking out the door as the bell rang. That girl didn't waste any time did she? I pulled my textbook from the desk and hurried from my seat trying to catch her but it wasn't meant to be.

Mr. Flemming placed himself between me and the door and refused to budge an inch. Other students snickered as they filed past me. I even got a few shoulders to the back, forcing me to shift my weight or I would have fallen right into Mr. Flemming's chest.

Once the classroom was empty, he motioned for me to take a seat as he leaned against the front of his desk. "David, I just wanted to take the time to fill you in on the way things work here at Thorston."

I didn't need him to tell me a thing. I already knew. Spoiled rich kids with nothing better to do with their time than make others people's lives unhappy, ran this show and teachers like him did nothing to stop it.

My mind went to Rowan and I thought, 'well, maybe not all the rich kids are that bad'. I leaned forward and gripped the edge of the desk I was sitting in. "Mr. Flemming, if you don't mind, can we have this little chat tomorrow. I have a class to get to and I don't want to be late again."

He pushed off of the desk and closed the distance between us. "Your last name doesn't give you carte blanch to do as you please here Trumaine. I'm going to be keeping a close eye on you."

Just great, that's exactly what I needed. A psycho vampire watchdog, who had it in for me for some unknown reason.

"Sure thing Mr. Flemming, you've got an eye on me. I've got it." I ran out of the room with my roster in one hand and the map in another. I was so busy comparing the two, not paying attention to where I was going that I walked right into someone.

"Hey man I am so sorry," I said when I looked down and saw Dante sprawled across the floor. I took his outstretched hand and pulled him up from the floor with practically no effort at all.

"It's ok, I am unharmed," he replied in a thick Dracula like voice. He offered his hand. "My name is Dante Dobra. I am pleased to meet you."

I shook his hand and looked down at my roster with and exasperated expression. "Do you mind?" He pointed to the crumpled papers in my hand and I gladly forked them over. He gave them the once over and passed them back. "We have most of the same classes. You're welcomed to walk with me to gym if you want. "

"Dude that would be so cool." I fell in place beside Dante and followed him through the dark obsidian hall.

We walked in silence for a few seconds when Dante cleared his throat. "You must overlook the students here. Most of them come from old families and have lived their entire lives looking down at others from their golden spoons."

I laughed easily. "You don't have to tell me that, I kinda figured it out." I looked over at him and took good sniff. What I found stopped me dead in my tracks. This kid was human!

Dante looked back at me with a sad smile. "I see you have discovered the reason behind my own solitude among our peers." He walked back to me and pressed his hand to my back urging me forward. "Come, I promise I'll explain everything later. For now we don't want ton be late."

The gym was a huge cavern at the heart of The Catacombs. There were three levels peppered with doors that led to stairways and inclines that all went down. At the bottom there were two full sized basketball courts sitting end to end. Huge spotlights were situated around the expanse, bathing the are in so much light, you wouldn't guess that we were almost a hundred feet underground.

Their looked like there was three separate classes going on a the same time. Dante led us down an incline and over to a group of students seated at the farthest end of the bleachers.
