Hi! I hope you enjoy this story! I have read a lot of Divergent fanfiction, and decided to write some of my own. I own nothing of this story.
Note: The places with single quotations are the characters personal thoughts.

Year 3055-Chicago
I sit down at my desk in my plain Abnegation grey bedroom with a grey diary in front of me, and weirdly enough, a grey pencil. My life is completely grey. Tomorrow is my choosing ceremony. The day that I can finally leave this place called Hell. The day that I can join my brother in Dauntless, and leave our monster of a father behind. I stare at the diary, and start to think. 'This is my chance to expose Marcus for what he really is. They need to know what mine and Tobias's lives have been like. He can't do anything to me anymore... I am not afraid anymore.' Tobias always told me before he left that I had a gift to tell stories. So here it goes, world. This is my story.
Our founders built a wall around our city. They say that it will keep us safe from the outsiders. I, Sarah Elizabeth Eaton, don't believe them. My father Marcus says that it is selfish to not believe in our founders intentions, but I don't. Because the walls that I have built up in my heart after eleven years of abuse and torture, still haven't kept me safe. You ask 'How can a 16 year old girl from Abnegation know anything about abuse?', well let me tell you, I know too much.
My 'father' Marcus Eaton is one of the leaders of our faction. I call him by his first name because I can't remember when the last time was that I called him my father. My mother left us when I was 5 (my brother Tobias was 6) for a man that she was having an affair with from Erudite. That's when Marcus snapped completely. The abuse had started before I was born. But got worse as Marcus's work became more stressful. One of my first memories of my plain grey world was my mother being thrown across the room and into the dinner table with glass flying everywhere and her screaming. He never touched me or my brother until she left. And that, I can never forgive her for. To her, we would've been safe when she left. But she was wrong. As we got older, the punishments got worse. Such as, lashing us with his belt, locking us in the tiny closet up stairs for a week with no food, burning us, and just plain beatings. But the belt was his favorite. He thought that he could beat us into the picture perfect Abnegation children, but all he did was make us hate him more and more with every beating.
From the time I was 3 years old, I never once remembered my father telling me and Tobias that he loved us. Ever. My brother and I had each other though, and we'd always tell each other that we loved the other. We were all that either one of us had. Tobias would always try and protect me from my punishments, but it just ended in harsher ones for both us. I remember a time........
"Sarah Elizabeth! Get down here now!", I'm roughly jerked out of my thoughts by Marcus's booming voice downstairs and the slamming of the front door. It must have been a bad day at work I thought. Then I looked at my watch. Oh no! My watch says 7:15! I was supposed to have supper started by now! I quickly push myself away from my desk and take my journal over to my bed in the corner. I duck under the bed frame and count, 1...2...3...4... floor boards to the left near the wall and flip the loose board up and slide it in. This is where I keep all of my 'selfish things'. Marcus will never find it. He's always too drunk.
I make my way downstairs before he has to call for me again, while trying to make myself look as sick as I could. That's what the lady that administered my test told me to do. 'Just tell your parents that you got sick from the syrum.' I wanted to tell her that that wouldn't work with my father; that I'd be punished for lying and be called selfish. But I couldn't.
When I'm down the stairs, I'm surprised to see Marcus sitting at the kitchen table with two plates of food-one in front of him, and one in front of my chair. I slowly approached him as I didn't know what was going on. Marcus turned to me with an evil smile and I felt my heart drop to my stomach. 'Oh no.... what is he thinking?' The last time he gave me a look like that was two weeks ago, and I was in bed for five days recovering. Marcus told everyone that I was ill; which I was, but he never helped me get better. I hadn't felt well for the last week, but I couldn't tell him or anyone that.
"Sarah Elizabeth?! Are you listening to anything that I'm saying?" I look up and realize that Marcus had stood up from his seat and was towering over me in a raging anger. "No, sir. I' m sorry.", I answered with my head down. "What did you say, sir?"
I felt a hand slap hard against my cheeks. Front then back. My hands immediately went to my face. "I said, you useless piece of nothing, that Mrs. Prior had to bring over our dinner, since you were too lazy to fix it yourself! What do have to say for yourself, young lady?!", Marcus screamed at me while I cower away from him.
"I am sorry, sir. After my aptitude test I got sick on the serum. They sent me home early, and I laid down for a while and waited for the nausea to pass. I let the time get away from me. Again, I'm sorry."
He didn't answer for a moment, but when he did his voice was dangerously quiet and calm. 'Uh oh....'
"What did you get on your test?"
"We're not supposed to tell any of that, sir." I felt another slap on my cheeks.
"You idiot! I won't ask again. What was your result?!" Marcus was yelling quite loudly now.
"Abnegation, sir." 'I'm technically not lying.... Abnegation was one of my results. Including Dauntless and Erudite.'
He took another step towards me while working his belt from around his pants. "I don't believe you, Sarah Elizabeth. I think you're lying to me. If you are, this will teach you to even think about leaving your faction." He starts to advance towards me with the belt poised ready to strike as I took big steps backwards toward the nearest wall. "This is for your own good, child"
Marcus raised his hand, and everything went black.
