Chapter 1: Outbreak

*Two Weeks Before the Present*

Reader's POV

"Nothing like a good ice cold drink to cool ya down." I said, drinking some cola. It was a hot day today. "It's been awhile since I last seen John. He said he wasn't feeling well so I better go check on him at the hospital." I said to myself as I grabbed my things to prepare for the visit. I needed to see John anyways. He worked in a science lab for the CEDA. To be honest, I've been having a bad feeling all day. Not physically, but like I know something bad is going to happen... I kind of shrug it off as I got into my car. I drove to Mercy Hospital where John was. I went up to the reception desk asking for his room. The receptionist looked grim, but had someone take me up to see him.

"What's going on?" I asked the nurse taking me up there. She looked at me. "It's better if you see it for yourself..." she said, looking nervous. Once we got off the elevator, we went to his room at the far end of the hall. Inside was John...but he looked very pale and his eyes were white. I mean there was no color in them! It's only been a week since he checked himself in! "What happened to him?!" I asked in shock. He was acting like a....zombie.... "We don't know what it is. We thought it was the flu but it's never turned anyone like this..." the nurse said, shaking. "He had a message and wanted me to give you something before he turned into this... he said he made this just in case...he told me to inject it in you." I was curious. She pulled out a syringe and got an alcohol wipe and injected it in me. "I don't know what it does, but he said it might make you very valuable if you were to get to one of his friends where he worked." The nurse said. "Did you pass this by his doctor?" I asked her, very concerned. "He told me it was to be between us. That he said whatever caused him to get sick wa-" she stopped when the news on the tv came on. The news report says that people have gone mad and were dying. "What's going on?!" I asked. I heard something and turned to the nurse. She was as pale as John, and had the same symptoms. She tackled me and I was trying to keep her from hitting me. I struggled and pushed her off and grabbed one of chairs and hit her with it. She was turned to mush after the chair hit her head. I was horrified I killed someone. I started to run as more and more of them appeared. I made it to the elevator and was on the first floor. People were panicking all over and running. I ran past the commotion and chaos outside. The zombie-like people hitting their friends, loved ones, and strangers, trying to rip at them. A few noticed me and I ran from them to my car. I started to drive as fast as I could to my house and got supplies out and then one of the swords I kept on the walls down. I need to leave now. It won't be long before they arrive where I am. I ran through the city. Fairfield, a once nice, big, lovely city...now overrun with zombies. I am alone with only one weapon, the clothes on my back, and the bag of food and water I have. This is gonna be one hell of an escape through this city on foot....

*Two Weeks Later*

It's been two weeks since the first epidemic of the infection. I met a group who allowed me to travel with them: Zoey, Francis, Louis, and Bill. We walked through an alleyway, trying to be as careful as possible. I can smell the corpses of the dead and hear the flies buzzing around. It was disgusting... We continued to walk when Bill held his hand up. "Hold up." He said, walking to a puddle of green goo. He knelt down and touched it, his fingered coated with it. "I ain't seen anything like this before." Bill was an army veteran. He was at a ceremony when this infection started. He was old like, maybe in his sixties. Hair and beard were all white. He was a nice guy when he and Francis don't get into it. "Jesus," Francis said sarcastically, "don't let that stop ya from smearing it all over yourself." I rolled my eyes. Francis was a biker. Yes he had a motorcycle and was part of a gang called Hell's Legion. Most of all, Francis was an asshole. Period. But a good shot. Bill stood up and went to Francis and proceeded to wipe his fingers clean on Francis's vest. "They're changing." Bill said, when he was finish. Louis and I snickered a bit and smirked. "Ugh! Damnit Bill!" Francis said, grossed out and angry. "Ugh! It stinks!" I had to keep myself from laughing. "It's not funny (Y/n)!" Francis said, growling. "It's funny when Bill does things like that to you." I said, chuckling. That all ended when we heard sobbing. Bill turned his head to a door in the alley way. "Someone is still alive." Zoey said, looking at the door. I felt something bad would happen if we opened that door. I was about to have a panic attack because I knew out moments of peace would be interrupted so soon. I always have this sixth sense of knowing when danger was near.
