hey, so, i'm not very educated on writing, i do enjoy it but i don't do it lots. so, i'm not sure whether this fic will have a slowburn or go too quickly. i may not want to make big changes if people, way later on, realize that it's gone too fast, because that means i'd have to fix a lot, which i'm often not up to doing.
also ayy i live for keith and pidge being bros. shiro is keith's actual big bro in this fic too. and pidge is a she in this fic so if you have any complaints please keep them to yourself, and enjoy the rest of the fic. :) thank you !!

the alarm clock went off, slightly jolting keith awake from his sleep. he groaned tiredly, rolling over, reaching an arm out and silencing the alarm, slamming his hand down on it rather harshly. he huffed, feeling awkward as he lay on his stomach, rolling over once more to lay on his back before he sat up. the boy ran fingers through his raven black hair, yawning softly, taking sight of his bedroom. he stilled once he heard the door creak open slowly, easing up when he took notice of his brother, shiro.

"was wondering when you'd wake up," his brother said, his voice rather raspy. he must've had a rough night or something, keith assumed. "yeah, well, while you were wondering, i was hoping i wouldn't," he joked, but not really on one half.

shiro smiled a bit, slowly walking back out. "well, c'mon dude," he told him, "get ready. you know we'll get our asses beat if we're late."

"since when do you care about being late?" keith snorted, getting up.

"since i started dating allura."

"ah... the honeymoon phase." he nodded slowly, stifling a laugh, beginning to change into proper clothes. he heard a 'what do you know?' come from shiro in the kitchen, but he didn't bother replying.

looking for what to wear, he picked out a plain black shirt, and a pinkish-reddish sweater with a pastel lime-green alien head imprinted onto the center of it. next he'd look for pants; he chose a pair of black skinny jeans and just put on socks, plain white ones. keith went to the bathroom and did the basic things: brush your teeth, check or fix your hair, whatever you'd do with it, deodorant probably... pretty much it.

once he was finished, he went into the kitchen where shiro was, seeing him eating a bowl of lucky charms.

"are you serious?" keith snorted, smirking, picking up the box next to him.

"what?" shiro said, then his eyes widened a bit. "oh, hey- they're magically delicious!"

"magically disgusting," he set the box back down, sitting next to his older brother, going on his phone.

"you're disgusting."

once the two brothers made their way to school, they pretty much split.

well, not split. keith just stood there, watching shiro go over to his girlfriend, allura, and a bunch of the other 'cool kids,' or whatever you wanna call them. you see, shiro was always more of the social one, the one who usually tried his best in everything even though he'd end up slacking sometimes, but was still impressive and somehow admirable to the people who were considered the 'popular bunch' or 'cool kids.'

keith, on the other hand, was always shy, hid away from pretty much everyone except for shiro, and now, at this point in his life, he really didn't have shiro. the boy had a hard time building relationships with people, talking to people, just being in any social situation. he came to realize this later on that it was slight, if not bad social anxiety. he was introverted, too, and asocial if you will.

he only had one friend, and that was a small freshman girl, katie, but everyone seemed to call her pidge because she said that's what she'd preferred since day one of middle school. now, high school, she's still going by that name and sometimes she's even forgotten her actual birthname. speaking of pidge, he heard her voice from not so far away, calling to him. he turned to where he'd heard her voice call from, gasping a bit in slight surprise when she reached him.

"hey, keith!" she greeted, a bit out of breath.

"hey..." he said, noticing, tilting his head to the side curiously but with a bit of concern. "did you just.. run all the way here or something?"

"well, kind of," pidge shrugged, pushing her glasses up a bit. "matt didn't come home till this morning for some reason, must've stayed somewhere with a friend, and when he came home i was all ready to go and he got so mad at me for helping with his math test, only to intentionally make him fail, so, he's looking for me and he's probably gonna beat the shit out of me."

"jesus, dude," keith chuckled. "we should hide somewhere, then, if he's looking for you. he could be here any second."

"we only have like, 5 minutes until school starts," she reassured him. "i'll be fine. i'll run all the way back home and tell my parents, and then they'll scold him with the 'boys can hit girls' bull."

the boy shrugged, looking around briefly, then back at pidge, "you two are a mess of siblings."

pidge shrugged.

keith thought for a moment, looking over at shiro, who had his arm wrapped around allura protectively yet lovingly, taking sight of his other friends who he didn't really know the name of. they seemed to be looking confused and talking about something, probably questioning where matt was, because he too was part of the 'cool kids.'

"hey, um," he looked back at pidge, who looked at him curiously. he felt awkward asking this, but it was killing him, "do you have an idea who matt might've been hanging out with last night?"

she squinted at him briefly, a bit questioningly but also in thought, before answering. "i feel like it could be.. l... larry? forget his name. you know, the dude who's somehow adored by several girls here, desperately trying to be befriended by other guys-"

"lance," keith blurted out, but then felt he was too loud (when he actually wasn't), covering his mouth, but eased up shortly after. "it's lance. the brunet guy. cuban kid."

"oh- yeah!" pidge nodded. "why did you want to know?"

keith felt a rush of anxiety surge through him, making him feel even more awkward than when he asked the question. the thing is, no one knew this little secret of his: that he admired lance so much, had grown feelings for him even though they like, never talked at all. not even pidge knew, and i mean, it's not like they were the closest of friends, keith didn't even trust his own brother with much. that's kind of how bad he was at building relationships with people, if i'm correct. but, yes, he had taken a secret yet strong liking to this boy, who was already adored by many, and probably very straight, whereas keith was... extremely gay. again, no one knew that. well, pidge did, because that's not much. shiro did, but he never told anyone, keith made sure of it. because you know siblings. sometimes they say things that are meant to be kept private, but keith made sure that shiro would keep his mouth shut at all times unless it was just pidge there with them.

he had lots of feelings for lance, despite not even knowing what lance was fully like because he didn't have much of any experience with him. but he noticed that often times, lance would stop to compliment people, boy or girl, usually flirt too, or help them with things. he seemed kind and helpful but also acted witty or goofy sometimes too, especially with friends. keith would always pressure himself into trying to talk to lance, but, hey. a loner like him, talking to a high-and-mighty boy like lance mcclain? no way in hell would that go anywhere close to smoothly.

"it's no reason," he shrugged it off like that, and pidge hummed, but didn't say anything else.

but, obviously above that, there lay the very reason. he just lied, and hid it away because he knew if others found out, everyone else would, and he would ruin things for lance probably too, and just, fuck up everything. which he couldn't let happen.

and he's not going to let it happen, either.
