Rule 1: Have Fun

"Does it have to be Ashton?" I ask my friends, not very happy with their choice.

"Yes," Jade says seriously, in a tone that makes me know she's not going to be changing her mind.

I look across the cafeteria to see Ashton Irwin sitting with three of his friends, as usual.

"How am I even going to get him to talk to me?" I ask.

Both of them shrug,"that's your problem, not ours," Alexis says and I groan.

"Go sit by them, there, there is your start," Jade says, handing me my tray, urging me to get up,"and just have fun."

"This isn't a good idea," I say nervously, getting up.

"C'mon Diana, do this or you're forever the heartbreakee," Alexis says and I get up going to Ashton's table.

"Mind if I sit here?" I ask, kind of afraid that they're going to say no.

"Of course," Ashton says, and I smile sitting down,"I'm Ashton," he says, holding out his hand and I shake it.

We share eye contact for a little bit more than a normal meeting and one of his friends awkwardly coughs, causing both of us to look away.

"Oh yeah that's Calum, Luke, and Michael," he says, introducing them.

"Hi, I'm Diana," I say with a small smile.

"Don't you usually sit over there with your friends?" Michael says, coming off a bit rude.

"Yeah, they're just talking about some date or something and I got bored," I say, lying so easily it was kind of scary to myself.

"Oh, I don't know how much fun our conversation will be to you," Calum says, giving Michael a stern look.

"So anyways, sorry about not being able to be at practice later," Luke says.

"Practice for what?" I ask.

"Band practice," Ashton says.

"Like school band? I thought they practiced during-" I start, but Michael cuts me off.

"No, like actual band practice, bands like The Killers, Nirvana, Fall out Boy," he says, still not very nicely, and I have no idea what he's talking about.

Michael just gets this really annoyed look once he realizes I'm lost.

Calum sends him another look of warning, that I wasn't meant to see.

"Maybe I should just g-" I start, but interrupted by Ashton.

"No, I'm sorry about Michael, you can stay," he says, holding onto my arm since I had started to get up from my seat, and I sit back down.

"So, I got us a gig for tomorrow," Calum says proudly and they all cheer.

"Good luck, I'm sure you guys will do great," I say, actually really interested.

"You could come if you want," Ashton says, smiling widely.

"Sure," I say and smile back.

Calum, Luke, and Ashton spend the rest of the lunch hour telling me about their band and about the gig they're going to play. They even told me about some of the songs they have written.

Once the bell rings, I head to my locker, grabbing my Maths book.

Maybe I shouldn't do this, just admit that I am and always will be the heartbreakee and not the heartbreaker. I mean, I really don't want to hurt Ashton in anyway. He's never done anything wrong to me, or anyone else that I know of. I don't want to be a heartbreakee for the rest of my life either though.

"So, how did it go?" Alexis asks, coming up behind me and to her locker, followed by Jade.

"Good, I think," I say shrugging.

"You better be knowing if you wanna win this bet, you only have a month," Jade says, coming up from behind Alexis and putting in the combination to her locker.

I roll my eyes in response,"I don't know if this is a good thing to do," I say.

"Wait, Diana Robinson has feelings?" Jade asks,"I thought that was a myth!" Earning another eye roll from me.

"You don't have feelings for him do you?" Alexis asks, raising her eyebrow.

"No, of course not. I just met him," I say, lying.

"Good, you can't fall for one of those losers," Jade says.

"They aren't losers," I say.

"It seems to me that you like him," Alexis says.

"I don't like him! I just don't think it's the right thing to do!" I say.

The bell rings, making me stop rant that was about to start.

"Whatever, just remember the bet, no falling," Jade says, and walks to her class.

"Alexis," I say.

"You're the one who made the bet," she says and goes to her class leaving me in the empty hall by myself.
