In the Shadows

People knew him. Everyone seemed to know him. The captain of Aobajohsai, Oikawa Tooru.

I am known as his shadow, the vice-captain, Iwaizumi Hajime.

He is my best friend, a friend I knew since we were kids. Sadly, I know everything about him. I know how he acts when he's around his fans, smiling like an idiot with his happy-go-lucky attitude. I know how he acts on court. The smart and cunning captain that will do anything to lead his team to victory.

I was never jealous of his fame or his "pretty looks" as his fans would say. I am his shadow, his supporter, and I was fine with that.

I was fine with that until our third year of high school.

Many girls would flock him and confess their undying love to him. The girls would claim they "liked" or "loved" Oikawa, but they only like his little show he puts on, his mask. I was used to seeing girls standing outside the gym, waiting to see Oikawa so they can praise and compliment him. One day, a girl came in the gym during practice and gave Oikawa some homework assignments.

"Ah! Thank you so much!" Oikawa practically cheered at the girl.

"Tsk" the girl sneered at Oikawa as she walked out the gym.

Nothing really special happened. I thought she was different than the other girls that knew Oikawa.

She was different.

She caught the attention of Oikawa Tooru. He would follow her around every day. He would beg her to watch the volleyball matches. Oikawa would drag me to walk home with them almost every day after practice.

I found out her name was ______. It was a beautiful name. She was a third year and she was the class president. She was quite smart and she had some interest in volleyball. She liked animals and she would always feed the stray cats on the way home. She loved the spring time since that's when the cherry blossoms bloom.

I knew what was happening. Oikawa would start to talk about her and only her. His attention was on her and it seemed like she didn't mind. Slowly, she warmed up to Oikawa. She would come to the games and cheer for him and only him.

It was cloudy in the night sky. Practice was over and everyone started to leave. But that's when it happened and I couldn't do anything to stop it.

"Will you be my girlfriend _____-chan?"Oikawa said in such soft voice.

Her response was simple. Something she didn't even have to think twice about.

"Yes."

At that moment, a large cloud blocked the bright moon and a shadow casts over the Earth.

I couldn't do anything to stop it. I knew this would've happened. It was obvious the way they looked at each other. But, neither of them knew how I looked at her.

I, Iwaizumi Hajime, was in love with her.
