New Jersey, New Beginnings

I step outside and smell the cold, crisp autumn air.  I take in the view of the beautiful orange, red, and yellow leaves falling to their death just to be reborn again next spring.  I sense something strange in the air, using my nose to sniff it out I smell an odd odor like a new Calvin Klein cologne, it's distant but it's there.  A breeze picks up from the north bringing the scent with it; It touches my nose gently like a ghost brushing my face.  I take a deep breath filling my lungs with that delicious smelling air trying to ignore the new scent.

"Nat?"  My mother yells at me from inside the house.

"What?!"  I yell in response.

"Where are you honey?" She asks.

"I'm outside! I'll be in in a moment." I yell loud enough so she can hear me.

I heard the distant crunching of leaves and my instincts made me swerve around quickly to try and figure out where the location of the sound was.

"Who's there?" I say suspiciously.  No response.  My curiosity levels were high; I climbed down the steps of my deck and somehow wound up in the woods behind my house.  I look around swiftly, trying to find the source of the crunching leaves.  All that brought to my wandering eyes was a squirrel clambering around in the underbrush, he noticed me and scurried up a tree for safety.  With my adrenaline rushing I was disappointed that nothing exciting happened; I ran back towards my deck to fulfill my mother's request for me.  I walk inside and yell her name.

"Mom!  I'm here, what did you want?!" I shouted.

"Oh honey, I just thought we could have some mother daughter time. Maybe carve some pumpkins, or bake a pumpkin pie?  You know fall stuff!  I know its been rough for you these past couple of days.  I thought getting into the fall spirit would help brighten your mood a little bit."  She smiled at me with big, warm, motherly eyes.

"Thanks Mom.  Maybe in a little bit." She stroked my hair and smiled.  I pondered as I smelled the aroma of the cologne as it ran by my nostrils again.

"Do you smell that too?" I questioned my mom to make sure I wasn't crazy.  She was fully Wolve, a rogue, where we came from people like us were not accepted.  You were either a Wolve or a Vlade.  Never both, the two packs were supposed to be separate; have a burning flame of hatred for each other.  My dad is a Vlade, he was raised in the human world though, his parents never told him he was special; he saw my mother one day and instantly fell in love.  When my dad finally found out who, or should I say what he was, instant regret came to my mother.  Her and dad loved each other, but because of the pack code they couldn't be together.  My mom left her pack, my dad never belonged in one, and together they escaped societies cruel and unjust laws, and then they had me.  I am a glitch, I belong to neither the Wolves or the Vlades, I am special, nor am I accepted by either pack.

"Yes, I noticed it a while ago.  I figured that's what you were out there for." She hesitated and looked around nervously, then walked back up to her room upstairs.  "Let me know when you're ready for some bonding time!"  She hollered down the stairs.  I smiled and let out a small chuckle at her jolly behavior.

My ears twitched at the sound of a whisper about 3 miles away, a secret meeting was going on, I tuned out thinking I should be polite.  Like I said, I am special.  What is special about me is I have the combined powers of both Vlades and Wolves.  The senses of a Wolve, the ability to see and hear miles away, as well as run faster than a car on the highway exceeding speeds up to 80 miles per hour and jumping higher than a two story building, my strength was also better than any humans, being able to lift 200 pounds max.  My Vlade side however, allowed me to become invisible to the naked eye, even a Wolves'.  It also gave me the swiftness that no Wolve would have the ability of having, I have the memory of an elephant, I can remember things so vividly that I can recall a date and exact time of a situation that happened over 5 years ago.  I as well can transform into a bat, and teleport to a new place within a 50 mile radius.  I am a Glitch because less than .10% of the Wolve and Vlade population is like me.  And I am illegal, I am constantly being hunted down by both packs, my parents have to persistently move because our location gets compromised, I am only 16, and don't have the skills to control every single power I have, so sporadic episodes break out and I often get caught.

We just recently moved to our current location in New Jersey, the weather was cold and Jack Frost was soon to be visiting, the first nips of winter were starting to appear as Thanksgiving time was now approaching.  The foliage sprinkled the trees in a beautiful array of oranges, reds, and yellows giving that inevitable Autumn feel.  The houses were decorated with lively orange pumpkins and fun spiders and spooky Halloween decorations, even though Halloween had already passed.  I loved the fall time, however I was not quite a fan of school.  I never really had any friends because I was always moving so often.  I was always considered the "weird" kid at my schools, considering that I always stayed quite; I never had an interest in talking to anyone because all my schools were human, I wasn't allowed to join a pack or I'd be killed so I was forced to go to Mortal schools.  The only time I ever had a friend was back in Michigan, and that didn't last very long; I got caught by the MIWP(Michigan Wolve Pack).  They captured and tortured me, my parents broke in and saved me, we escaped but I was brutally beat up.  I still have a long scar leading from my left shoulder blade to the bottom of my spine, It was the deepest cut I had ever endured, caused by a whip repeatedly hitting the same spot, breaking my skin and letting the blood ooze out, never loosing consciousness I had to suffer through, the whole time tears shedding from my eyes as I waited for the torture to be over and my death to wash over my body like a cloud covering the sun on a brutally hot day.  It wasn't the first time it had happened but I had hoped it was the last, unfortunately for me it wasn't and I know I am going to have to go through more experiences like it.  I am scared for my future, I am scared that the next time WILL be my last, that is why I am constantly alert and awake I can't afford to mess up again...not like that.
