"Is that supposed to be a pun?" Taylor grins at the sign outside the restaurant, which reads "Achilles' Lyre."

"Like Achilles' lair but it's Lyre? 'Cause I think that's a nice play on the words. I love puns – and Greek mythology. So you can imagine how the two of them toge-" Taylor breaks off mid sentence to meet Karlie's stormy green eyes, hooded by narrowed brows. She could've sworn the woman's intense eyes were a shade lighter a few seconds ago.

"Sorry for rambling. I just can't believe my luck in landing this job. It's not so easy finding a job in a city you've just moved into, and the odds are even slimmer when it's freaking New York," Taylor offers half a smile at the taller performer standing before her.

Karlie's left eyebrow twitches before she sighs, her tensed shoulders sagging along with her patience. "No," she mutters as she turns around to face the doors to the restaurant, "it's not meant to be a pun."

"Oh," Taylor says as she follows Karlie into the restaurant, almost hitting her head on the door that Karlie fails to hold open.

"Dan-"

"It's going to be Mr. Lane if you're using that tone, Miss Kloss."

"Ok, boss, but I don't understand why-"

"You don't need to understand. It's not your position."

"I know that. I get it! But think. Why would you move Jas all the way to the other frickin' side of New York when you could've just placed Taylor there?! Now I have to room with that psycho. Are you deaf, Daniel? Because I am now, after hearing her bitch for 10 hours on end."

"Precisely something you are doing right now. And you know very well why Miss Tookes was moved to the second branch of the restaurant," Daniel Lane, the founder of Achilles' Lyre, shifts through papers at the back of the restaurant, where the stage is located. The end of his mouth tugs upwards, creating a small crease in his smooth ebony skin. At 53, Daniel could walk for Gucci and fit perfectly into place with all the other fresh young models.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. You want someone experienced at the second branch, specifically a dancer, and you want to ROB me and Jasmine of our iconic duet for-" Karlie stops.

Daniel lifts his eyes from the stack of papers to look expectantly at the young dancer.

Karlie's face washes over with newfound light. "Oh my god – take me! I'll go instead! Oh please, Daniel, I was forced to accept Taylucifer to be my roommate because I'm broke as shit and I don't have the time to find anyone else to pay rent and... Please?"

"No," comes her boss' concise but amused answer as he hands the blonde the papers he was looking for. "The music sheets. You will be here with her to practice 2 hours after closing time every weekday leading up to the event. Very important people have rented us out. I want the performance to be at its best. Three weeks Miss Kloss, and treat Miss Swift as best as you can. We can't afford to lose her."

Karlie groans, her thin lips forming into a pout as she begins to march away, calling behind her back, "Fine. But I'm getting a huge ass raise."

"Oh, and Karlie," Daniel says, his dark eyes twinkling, "Taylor's been here for 10 minutes. Not hours."

Taylor makes her way to the stage, taking in the size of the restaurant. She has never performed in a place so... capacious. Even with the dozens of tables and chairs fit into the room, it still looks spacious and elegant.

The singer shivers with excitement and nerves. It is a privilege to be able to work in such a classy and praised place, where the pay is more than decent, and the performers adorning the stage incredible enough to be mistaken for Broadway stars.

Well perhaps that is a reach, but she could tell that what was once just a local fancy restaurant at Moonshine Plaza, New York City, is now going places, already opening up a second branch on the other end of the city.

The sound of the musician's heels hitting the stage floor reverberates around the now desolate restaurant.

There is something eerie about the ghosts of the people that dined here lingering on the chairs, their chatter once filled with warmth and life now leeched into the quiet hum of the AC, the only remnant of activity that Taylor can identify.

Where is Karlie? The restaurant closed 20 minutes ago at 11. She should be here by now.

Taylor shivers once again, this time with a feeling of disquiet. She's not an idiot. She could tell Karlie was pissed about the new arrangements earlier on in the night when she showed the musician around.

She decides to make use of her time while waiting for the dancer.

Karlie examines the newcomer from backstage. Her pointe shoes lay in a tangled heap on the floor beside her. For the first time, Karlie appreciates the damned space where she's meant to wait before gracing the stage. It makes a good eavesdropping spot, although cramped.

Her gaze softens as she watches Taylor Swift approach the new organ on the side of the stage, pushing back the sleeves of her sweater so her delicate hands emerge. The musician presses a finger to one key, and the clarion call of a note sends chills down Karlie's spine. Taylor tentatively plays another note, birthing a sound and sight so simple yet so captivating.

The dancer feels something unrecognizable stir in her heart as she watches the only other soul in the vast room earnestly play a serene melody, drawing her into a reverie of idyll.

It is only when Taylor stops playing that Karle realizes she has been holding her breath, and she lets it out in a whoosh, her mind now brimming with wonder, the hairs still standing up on the sides of her arm.

The organ that Karlie once thought as an intruder on her stage doesn't look so harsh anymore with Swift resting before it.
