"Taking a shortcut isn't always the fastest way to get there," she said.
"Yes, it is," I argued. "Why else would it be called a SHORTcut?!" I stormed off towards the woods, towards the ever falling sun. I turned back to see my sister look behind her, then anxiously hurry to catch up. Ashley never wanted to listen to me, but after a while, realized most of the time I was right.
"Are you sure this is a shortcut?" she asked. "Of course, I use it all the time. But don't you dare tell Monica and Dad!" Neither of us ever warmed up to our stepmother, and we never called her Mom, even after five years.
Ashley catches up with me, and looks around us, with something of a worried look on her face. "Don't worry, I know this trail like the back of my hand." As we walk, we slowly come to the fork that has our house to the right, and the highway to the left.
As we head down the right path, Ashley spins around and grabs my arm. I see the scared look on her face, and slowly turn to see a tree 10 feet away from us in the middle of the path.
"That wasn't there before," I say. Out of the corner of my right eye I see her shake her head, and out of my left, something moves.
