Moonlight shone down over the Black Lake as the boats to take the first years to the castle. The castle loomed over the lake like a magnificent beast waiting for its prey. The anxiety that filled Raven's mind as the boat was pulled closer and closer to the shore. Chatter filled Raven's ears as she sat there. Pulling her black Hogwarts robe closer over her chest. Her nerves were overwhelming, this was the first time in three years that she had spent time outside of her room in the London house her father bought. Many tragedies had happened in that house even in the short time. The cold, yet slightly salty air hit the sides of Raven's face. She looked down into the water, seeing nothing but her reflection. The water didn't seem to move much, despite how fast they were sailing. Everyone could hear Hagrid's voice bellowing in the distance. His boat was right at the front, guiding the rest. She heard some of the children talk about how they were looking forward to the school year. It was mandatory for first years to take; Transfiguration, Charms, Potions, History of Magic, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Astronomy, and Herbology. The class Raven was least looking forward to was flying, she had never thought broom-flying was a good idea for her, it was all about balance, and Raven was never blessed with that. Although as she sat there quietly listening to everyone else express what they thought was going to be their favorite class, she sat there thinking about how History of Magic sounded fascinating, she also knew she would have to at least try to pay attention through Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Growing up with her father she knew many dark magic spells but was still too inexperienced to try them out on an actual person. Her father had always told her that dark magic isn't something that should be feared, it's something that should be used by the intelligent witches and wizards, but Raven knew deep down what he means by that. He meant Purebloods. She always hated when her father would speak about her blood heritage as if it was something to be proud of. She was pulled out of her thoughts as Hagrid spoke a little louder, as witches and wizards of all shapes and sizes climbed out of the magical wooden boats, and gathered on the rocky shore. As she climbed and followed a bunch of students and lined up listening to the words of Hagrid. Her eyes dotted around her taking in the scenery. The long winding stairs that led up to one of the many entrances to the castle. They were lit with large burning torches, making the stone steps glow a bright orange as Hagrid lead the large group of first years into the castle.
The chatter grew louder as Raven climbed the stairs, reaching inevitably closer to the castle, she noticed how all the gargoyles sat, waiting, guarding the castle. A group of students pushed past her looking back down into the Black Lake as mermaids made patterns in the water. Climbing and climbing, eventually she felt towards the back of the line, taking her time, taking in everything. Things were so new to her, she wondered what adventures she would go on during the year and all the things she was likely to learn, and if it would ever please her father. The castle loomed over her as they all wandered into the castle, it was quiet and each footstep echoed through the large rooms. Looking around Raven pushed her long dark hair over her shoulder and crossed her arms over her chests as she watched her feet climb up the stairs. Students in front of her stopping as they got to the top of the stairs. She looked up and saw one the professors, someone she could only guess was Professor McGonagall. She wore a large witch hat and a velvet emerald cloak, as she cleared her throat, looking down at the students. "Welcome to Hogwarts. Now, in a few moments you will pass through these doors and join your classmates, but before you take your seats, you must be sorted into your houses. They are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Now while you're here, your house will be like your family. Your triumphs will earn you points. Any rule breaking, and you will lose points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the house cup." All the first years listened carefully to what Professor McGonagall had to say. The group was taken into a small room which was set at the side of the Great hall, where the rest of the students were awaiting the arrival of the first years.
Minutes passed and more and more anxiety crept into Raven's mind as she waiting for them to be led into the Great Hall. Everyone seemed to be making friends, but yet she was still trying to decide what house she wanted to be in. She had all the qualities of a Slytherin but at the same time, she would be well fitted into the Ravenclaw. As she thought more and more about it her hands started to shake. She panicked and thought about what her father would say about her being in a house not fit for Purebloods. She balled her hands into fists trying to stop them from shaking as the door was opened and the professor spoke again "We are ready for you now..." Her tone was mellow with a strong Scottish accent. Exiting the small room they were walking in rows of three as they made their way to the front of the hall where in the center was a metal owl shaped podium, called the Owl Lecturn where the headmaster stood and informed the students of changes to the school year. It wasn't long after the speech that the famous sorting hat was brought out and placed upon a stool. Professor McGonagall took out a large scroll and began reading names off in alphabetical order. Names past and it was getting close to when Raven's name was going to be called out. As she listened to the houses which students were being sorted into she notice how there had been one for Slytherin. Dread glazed over her face as she thought about the sorting hat calling her out a Slytherin. She swallowed deeply and looked around the room, the sky enchanted brought some kind of peace to her mind as she looked at it.
She felt her heart pound against her rib cage as the professor called out her name. "Raven Corby" The thick Scottish accent made her name seem more elegant than she had heard it before. Her mouth became dry as she slowly walked up to the front and sat on the stool. She turned her head and looked at Professor McGonagall with a pleading eye, she wanted to run, flee from this situation where everyone was looking at her. The hat was placed on her head and within seconds the hat was moving her head around as it was trying to weigh up the traits of each house. In her mind she was begging the hat not to choose Ravenclaw, she didn't want the shame from her father. The hat turned her head before speaking loudly "Why not Ravenclaw, you have such intelligence, but Slytherin..." The hats voice trailed off as the room fell silent for a few minutes before finally, the hat shouted
"SLYTHERIN!!" Mixed feeling flooded Raven's mind as she the hat was lifted off her head and she made her way over to the table. As she slowly walked over she heard a few of the student's mutter and whisper about her. Climbing onto the bench, she was greeted by a few of her fellow housemates. She knew her father would be proud of her for getting into Slytherin but something deep down was telling her that her choices were about to be judged from here on out.
