My alarm clock went off at 7:30 in morning. Today is my 16th birthday and I couldn't be happier. I practically skipped down the stairs and into the kitchen.

"Happy Birthday sweetheart!" my mom said as she kissed my forehead. There was something in her voice that I could quite place, but I could tell something was wrong. I know I should be a good daughter and ask but I thought 'it's my 16th birthday for crying out loud! She should be happy for me!' so I acted like I didn't notice the slight edge in her voice.

"Thanks mom" I said with a smile, "Where's Jared, Ajay, and Jason? I thought they would be up by now." I walked over to the window to see if they were out in the shed fixing up those bikes and old cars they had found four weeks ago.

My mothers face dropped a little.

"They were up really late last night, didn't get home till maybe 2 in the morning." She said in a grave tone. I wiped around.

"WHAT!? That's completely unfair! My curfew is at midnight! And Ajay and Jason are younger than me!" I practically shrieked the words at my mother. Mom's eyes grew wide at my tone. Then she pulled the name card, "Rebecca Deanna Call, DO NOT use that tone with me. I know that it is your 16th birthday but that does not give you the right the use that voice with me." My eyes started to water and my hands started to shake (this tends to happen when I get angry).

"But mom," I said between clenched teeth, "it's not fair that my brothers get to stay out as late as they want but I can't!"

"I'm sorry Becca but the boys are-"she stopped short. Mom shook her head and I knew the discussion wasn't going to continue... not now anyway. After five minutes of awkward silence I heard the boys walking down the stairs.

"Morning sleepyheads!" I called with a smile. My good morning was followed by a few groans and muffled replies of "whatever". Mom cleared her throat and said, "Now boys, isn't there something you would like to say to your sister?" Jared was the only one that did look half asleep. He simply strolled over to the fridge, grabbed a carton of orange juice, and chugged the whole thing.

"Hey! I was going to drink some of that!" I laughed

"Yeah, yeah, yeah... Oh yeah, I forgot something!" and he disappeared up the stairs. I hear a crash followed by a string of curse words, I chuckled. Then Jared bounded back down the stairs with his hands behind his back. He glided over to me and smiled, "Happy Birthday Becky!" Then he handed me a medium sized package wrapped in sleek pink and brown polka dotted paper.

"Thanks Jared, but you didn't have to." I smiled and opened it. In side was a box was a gorgeous necklace- a tiny heart with an intricate pattern on it.

"Oh my gosh, Jared! I love it!" And I gave him a huge bear hug!

Through out the day I got several different presents, like I got a satin black dress with matching stiletto heels to wear to my big birthday bash. My best friend Alisha got me silver earrings and a sweet sixteen charm for my charm bracelet. My best guy friend Benny (who is gay but I mean what girl doesn't want a gay best friend!) got me a black Coach purse and a few books from my favorite bookstore. I have another best friend named Tess, she one of the richest kids in the whole town, so she got me a diamond necklace with matching earrings and bracelet. I thanked everyone for the wonder gifts and told them I would see them all later at my birthday party. Alisha picked me up outside my house and we headed over to her house to get ready. When pulled up to the familiar red brick house, we opened the door and greeted her parents. It was short little exchange; they wished me a happy birthday and hoped we had fun tonight. When we reached Alisha's room she started gabbing about how Alex, the football jock at our school, had asked her to my party.

"He came up to me after school and was all like 'hey would you like to come to Becca's party with me' and I was all like 'Well I will have to get back to you on that because I have gotten a lot of offers and-", I cut her off.

"Wait a minute Allie no one other than him has asked you, right?"

"Well yeah he was the only one who asked me but I could be like 'Oh my gosh! Yes! I haven't gotten asked yet so yes!' NO! I couldn't say that, that would totally turn him off!"

I rolled my eyes and laughed, sometimes I wondered what I would do with out her. Then she asked me a question I was hoping she would never ask me

"So...," Alli hesitated as she fiddled with the hem of her dress, "anyone asked you yet... I mean you're the birthday girl and everything so I didn't know."

I looked at her though the mirror, "No... no one has asked me yet actually. I don't really care it's not a huge deal. Anyway I'm ready to go. How do I look?" I put the mirror down and turned toward her. The satin of my black halter dress brushed against my knees and the knot of the straps pushed against the back of my neck. I had taken my hair down from its original ponytail so that the silky brown tendrils of my hair fell against my shoulders.

"Dayum girl! You be looking pretty hot there! Now let's go we are going to be late." and off we went down to the lakehouse where my perfect party awaited.
