"Soo hot!" Scarlett started to complain as we both walked down the pier. She was wearing blue shorts and a light blue top with a summer hat. I examind her from top to bottom.

"What are you looking at?" She asked as she caught me staring at her.

"Nothing." I said, looking down at my feet.

"Do I have anything on me?" She asked as she spread her arms and gave a little twirl.

"Yeah. Its something called clothes." I said with a sarcastic look on my face. She rolld her eyes and continued to walk ahead of me.

Me and Scarlett have been close friends for a long time. We have gone through all types of things that life throws at us together. We even comfort each other at our darkest times as well. Some peole even ask us if we are dating. We just laugh and deny it. I have never considered her in that way.

I skipped to keep up with her. "So this is what it feels like to skip school. Well its fucking boring." Scarlett said patting me on the shoulder.

"Yeah. You're right. It is fucking boring." I said with a sigh.

We both sat down at the edge and just keot looking at the horizon. We didnt talk, we just kept our eyes on the horizon until a loud bang caught our attention. We both looked back to see the roller coaster behind us collapse. Huge peices of metal flew every where. I pinned her down and covered her for protection. After a couple of seconds of silence, I decided that it was safe now and got up.

"Thanks. For the protection." She said with a giggle as she looked at my sorta skinny body.

I rolled my eyes and started to walk towards the collapsed roller coaster. She grabbed my shoulder and looked me in the eye. I lookd back at her with a sarcastic serious look. "Thanks. And I mean it." She said still looking at me in the eye.

"Yeah. What are friends for then." I gave a half-assed smile. She slapped on the back real hard and started laughing.

Her laughter was interrupted by the police sirens. We decide to leave and headed for my car.

"Turn on the radio for me." I asked without taking my eyes off the road. She nodded and startd to push buttons. I shook my head and laughedand turned on the radio myself. She huffed and keppt looking out the window.

Something caught my ears as Scarlett was speeding through channels. "Wait. Go back. I thought I heard somethin." She went back and stopped at channel 13.

"We just recieved information regarding the new disease that has been spreading through out America." My eyes widened as I heard the news reporter said it. I gave a confused look to Scarlett but she was focusing on the radio. "The disease is apparently brainwashing people to eat others. And there seamed to be a safe area in-" The transmission was interrupted by statics. "Well. This is huge. Hurry up and drive home, Im getting scared." Scarlett said as she started to wipe her glasses with her shirt. She wioes her glasses when she is nervous. I nodded and speeded home.

---

I got home walked in to find that no one was home. I just remembered that my parents left for a business trip to Tokyo. I opened the door wider to let Scarlett in. She sat on the couch with her legs crossed and spaced out. "Hey. You want anything?" I asked but I got response.

I grabbed a can of coke and walked up to her. "Scarlett Evelyn!" I yelled at her ears. She jumped up and started panting hard. "You little bullshit! You scared the shit out of me. Do t ever do that." Scarlett said, looking serious. I apologized and handed her the can. I sat down next to her and turned on the TV. It was the reporter guy from the radio earlier. I turned up the volume. "-there seemed to be a safe area in DC. But there is limited space." The reporter said. I looked at Scarlett and she was blankly staring at the TV. I let her think. What are they talking about? What disease? A lot of questions were running around in my head. I tilted my head back and closed my eyes.

---

I woke up at the sound of loud knockings. I opened my eyes and realized I fell asleep and so did Scarlett. She layed down on my shoulder and must hav falled asleep. I slowly and carefully took her and layed her down the couch. I ran to the door and opened it. To my suprise, it was Mark. "Oh. Its you. I didnt expect to see here today." I said after motioning him to keep quiet. He peeked inside and nodded. "Its all real. Everything is actually going to shit right now." Mark said waving his arms around like crazy. I gave him a confused look and he realised that I dont know what he was talking about.

"Nigga really? Have not seen the news? The fucking disease is turning people to zombies. The living dead." He exclaimed and my eyes widened.

"What!" I realized I yelled really loud. I looked back to see Scarlett get up. "Oh hi Mark. What are you doin here?" She asked whe rubbing her brown eyes real hard. I stopped her before it got really red. "Sorry I woke you up." I apologized and let Mark in. She shook her head and gave a smile.

Mark repeated saying the things he said to me to Scarlett. Her eyes widened with suprise. "We have to leave for DC as soon as possible." Mark said looking at me. "But its like on the other side of country." I protested, rubbing my forehead as I started thinking. "Look Delsin. I think Mark is right. We have to go to DC." Scarlett said as she put one hand on my shoulder. I nodded asked Mark if he had a plan. He squinted his eyes and gave a smirk. That mostly means he has a plan or he did something stupid.

"Are you coming or not?" Mark said as he started walking out of the door. Me and Scarlett exchanged looks and nodded.
