The moment Kai stepped into the fire temple, he stopped in his tracks, cold. It was odd -- he always felt so heated. Warm.
The sudden change scared him.
Then, hushed whispers filled his head. It flooded him.
"Kai!" The urgent cry drained the smaller ones, but he couldn't shake off the droplets the tiny sighs left.
The said boy rose his head, then took in a sharp intake of breath, "Nya!" he yelled, taking in the fact that his sister was dangling from a chain, which was holding her directly above a pit of lava.
The sword of fire was just a few feet away from her, the strong urge to grab it rushing through his veins.
A dark chuckle mended into the air, "Take it," the thing whispered, and Kai could see who it was. A shadow raised, its whole body cloaking the wall. Red eyes narrowed down at the fire ninja, who back up on instinct.
"Garmadon," he hissed.
Immediately, that cold feeling returned. It came so suddenly that Kai had flinched.
"Hnnn," the shadow hummed, "What are you waiting for? Pull out the sword... Pull it out so I can retrieve it."
"No!" Kai growled, "Do you really think I'd do that? You're a real idiot for a dark lord!"
"Am I?" came the sly response, "You need that sword to cut the chains trapping your sister. The metal that makes the chains are just about unbreakable-- unless..."
Kai didn't need to hear the rest of the sentence.
"It's okay, Kai!" Nya called, "I can-- get out-- of..." she struggled in the binds.
She then dropped down a few feet, a yelp escaping her lips, and the lava getting closer.
"Nya!" Kai clenched his teeth, jaw locking, "Dammit..."
He bolted towards Nya, pulling off a backflip as he slipped the sword out of its place in the ground with ease. The shrill sound of metal to metal rang in the air, and Kai swore that someone winced, but it wasn't the two of them. He settled on the fact that it was Garmadon, but his shadow looked slightly flustered too before recovering.
The shady outline's red eyes settled on Kai and Nya as they landed, creeping carefully towards the exit. An amused sound, probably a laugh, was the last thing Garmadon did before shrinking and disappearing from sight. Though, Kai knew he was long from gone.
"Stay close," he commanded to his sister.
"Trust me, I'm not going anywhere," Nya assured.
A shadow appeared again, and Kai jabbed at it.
The sword went right through.
"Oh crap," Kai murmured as Garmadon's shadow gained size. His laugher flooded the room, and his transparent claw-like hands rose to strike down on them.
As if fate decided to have mercy, a loud crumble of stones stopped his actions short, and a wave of rocks' shadows crashed down of him.
Kai recoiled, startled, and snapped back to reality when Nya tugged him forward, "Let's go!"
An enraged bellow raised into the air, though a quick glance at a still-buried Garmadon told the fire ninja that it wasn't him.
Instead, a dragon burst through the lava, said liquid splattering into the walls and ground, hissing at the cool stones. "Yes!" something snarled, a split-second later realizing that it was Garmadon. He had recovered from the rocks' shadows, "Fire guardian-- they are stealing the sword of fire! They are stealing your treasure!"
The fire dragon snorted loudly, smoke puffing out, slanted eyes fixed on Kai and Nya as it unfolded its wings. During a tense moment, the beast rose its mighty snout, opening it wide to screech out a deafening roar.
Then, just as quickly, it stopped short with a confused huff. Flustered, it stared back down at Kai and Nya, then at Garmadon. Finally, very swiftly, it snapped dangerously and rammed into the wall where Garmadon was.
An off-guard sound from the shadow king reached Kai's ears as he defended himself from the blow.
There was a small and squeaky, "oops," but Kai waved it off, "Now's the time to go," he said to his sister. A nod from Nya.
The two of them ran out of the fire temple, grinning at each other in triumph. Kai jumped up, "Take that!" he shouted, raising the fire sword into the air.
His attention then returned to Nya, "Follow me. We set up camp."
Nya smirked, "I think you're being a bit too cocky," was all she said.
