Katherine flopped down onto her bed. She patted the spot to her right and gestured for Alice to join her.
"You know, you could use your words." Alice laughed. Katherine just groaned in response.
"You knew exactly what I meant. Why must you expect so much from me?" She whined. Alice smirked at her best friend, but lay down next to her nonetheless. She rested her head on Katherine's outstretched arm and pulled the blanket on top of both of them. Katherine curled her body slightly into Alice's, making her tense up. She relaxed a bit when she remembered they were just going to sleep. Katherine didn't mean anything by it. But you want her to. You want her to put her arms around you. You want her to pull you close and hold you tight. You want her to want you.
No I don't! She's my best friend, nothing more. Alice had to stop and remind herself. You don't like her like that, you just care for her. That's all.
A few minutes passed in silence, the only sound coming from the ceiling fan above them. Katherine shifted, then sat upright. She grabbed the waistband of her shorts and shimmed out of them, sitting in just her underwear. She tossed them off her bed then did the same with her bra.
"That feels so much better," She sighed. Alice just stared at her, feeling rather uncomfortable. Do I take off my bottoms too? Would it be weird if we were both in our panties? Before she could lose her nerve, she copied her friend and stretched back down under the blanket.
She turned into her side to face Katherine. They locked eyes and Alice's breath hitched. She was so beautiful. Her best friend was just so, mesmerizing. Alice was suddenly aware that the room had gotten very quiet. She saw the steady rise and fall of her friend's chest as she slowly breathed. Alice's eyes couldn't help but wander to her lips. Slightly parted, pink and plump. Her mouth got very dry. No, she's your best friend. And she's straight. You can't think about her this way. Alice tried to see reason but it was futile.
"Alice, what's wrong?" Katherine's voice interrupted her inner monologue, bringing her to the present. Her eyes were wide and caring, eyebrows furrowed slightly. Alice couldn't think.
"I.. I think I might..." Before she could register what she was doing, her hand reached up to cup Katherine's cheek and she leaned in. The small gap between the two was closed, and Alice had her lips lightly but surely pressed against her friend's.
She smells so good. Her lips are soft. How does she get her cheeks so smooth? Thoughts blurred through Alice's head, but none more pressing than What on earth am I doing?
She suddenly broke away, yanking her hand back as though it was burning. Her mouth was gaping wide with shock, shock at what she had just done. She'd made the worst mistake of her life. She felt tears rising up, stinging her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She couldn't talk, could barely breath. Alice frantically pushed the covers off of her and jumped up out of the bed. Her hand was brought to her mouth, and she took three steps back. What had she done?
"I.. I'm so sorry." She chocked out, then turned and rushed out the door.
