Tick-Tock Tick-Tock Tick-Tock. That's the sound I've been hearing for the past hour. "That clock is so annoying," I said under my breathe. "Ruby, You chewing on that gum so loud is annoying. So, how about you shut it up," Vanessa said. I popped my gum really loud one last time before I threw it away in the trash can beside me. Vanessa let out a big sigh and I enjoyed the experience of annoying her.
Vanessa is my dad's secretary and I'm stuck with her while my dads in a meeting right now. Its Friday and I don't have school, but he forced me to work on my research paper here at his workplace. I mean I know I procrastinate, but damn. It's Friday for Christ sake. I was laying down on the waiting rooms couch, while Vanessa was sitting at her desk across the room. Vanessa is such a bitch to me and I fuck with her a lot. For example, the gum chewing. Vanessa's pretty and all, but I'm hotter. She has short wavy blonde hair, while I have long honey brown hair. I read in a magazine once that men prefer a woman with brown hair more than any other color and magazines never lie. I'll give her a point for those long legs she has, but guys will never notice them if she doesn't fix her posture. Such a clueless woman. I believe she's around 32, but every time I ask her for her age, she ignores me. She sometimes glares at me with her icy blue eyes and it gives me shivers up my back. I have soft hazel eyes, but blue eyes are more seductive to me, so I give her another point for that.
Anyway back to my boring paper about the gold rush. My dad wants me to do well on this one because he says he knows what its like to go to extreme measures to earn big cash and make a successful living (something along those lines). He's a lawyer by the way. I just hate the part where he's so judgy all the time but I love the green stacks that come in. I looked down at my rough draft and all I put was what the gold rush was and I just copied that from inside the encyclopedia. I'm a senior and next year, 1997, I graduate. I'm also 18 and I want to major in art, but my dad doesn't think that's the right choice. He wants me to go into business. Gross!! does he actually think I'm going to slave away for people I don't give a fuck about or their problem? sorry but not sorry.
I try to continue writing but my pencil breaks. I let out a grunt and turn to Vanessa asking if she has any other pencils. She tells me no which is stupid because she's the secretary. Isn't she supposed to write down important stuff my dad tells her? if I was my dad, I would've fired her ass by now. "Do you think my dad has any?" I asked.
"You don't need to worry about that sweetheart because he is in a meeting right now."
"so what am I supposed to do about my paper?"
"I don't give a fuck. it's 11:42, go for a walk and get something to eat. I'm sure your father gave you money earlier this week for being a brat and doing nothing."
"At least I get more money in a week than your broke ass gets in a month. And you're right I will take a walk."
I got up and walked straight to my dad's office door. Vanessa tried to get up and stop me but she was too late, I was already opening the door. I walked into the smell of bullshit and to the sight of the finest man I've seen in a while. He must be one of my dad's clients. He looked young, like somewhere in his 20's. He had brown hair and beautiful green eyes. "Ruby, pumpkin, what are you doing in here?" My dad asked. "I'm sorry sir, I tried to stop her," Vanessa said. "I only came in here to get a pencil dad, I was working really hard on my paper and mine broke. Do you have one?" I tried to sound as innocent as possible.
"Ruby you know better than to waltz in here when I'm doing business. You're interrupting me and Mr. Collins conversation. Now apologize."
"It's all right Albert. I'm sure shes just trying to get an A on that paper. My names Sam"
He reaches out his hand while still sitting in his chair. I walk up a few steps from the door to shake his hand. His hand was soft but not too soft. "I'm Ruby. It's very nice to meet you." Not wanting to, I let go of his hand and turn to my father who was sitting at his desk. "May I get a pencil right there?" I point to the dozens of pencils and pens on his desk. He lifts up his hand signaling for me to take one while reading through his papers. I lean over Sam so that my bare leg touched his warm hand that was laying on his thigh. Mid-reach, I looked back at Sam and gave him a sly smile. He kept the eye contact and had a little grin on his face. I grabbed my pencil and spun back to the door so that my short skirt brushed against his arm. "Thanks dad," I said while walking out. Vanessa Grabbed me by the arm and I turned to look at her.
"I saw what you did in there and I'm not having it. You're not going to flirt with your dad's work." She said.
"Get off of me!" I yelled not too loud. I yanked away from her. "Don't worry about it honey" I said grinning. "nobody is flirting with anybody". I rolled my eyes and walked back to the couch with my well-deserved pencil.
If poor Vanessa only knew, when I want something, I get it.
