James's whole childhood was probably perfect and then he comes to school and Remus is obviously screwed up and has deep self-doubt and doesn't even expect to have friends and Sirius is fucked up by his family and full of way more anger than an 11 year old should be Peter was probably really unsure of himself and thought he was crap at everything and James was just like yes these people are mine and maybe I can't fix their problems but I can make things better. So he came up with the animagus idea for Remus and when Sirius left his family James' family took him in and I'm sure he was 100% there for Peter boosting his confidence and hell just being friends with all of them probably made them all feel better about themselves. James may have been a bit of a dick when he was a teenager but he was also a fantastic friend.
